A3 pt1 : I'd be devastated lol. I do a lot of onboarding w/ my AUs to see where we are re: AI use (I don't use AI at all, so I want to make sure it's not something they use). I'd bring it up on a call (or next email) to ask about their writing process for that bit & let them know [cont] #StetChat

That's a good way to handle it, Audra. #StetChat

Voice to text dictation can be very dicey. I love the idea, but the files are always a mess. #StetChat

A4: If I generally like the client and their writing, I'll take the money if they want to keep paying me. 🤷‍♀️

If the client is rude or the writing sucks/is offensive, I'm gonna bow out. Or if I just get so annoyed at them not engaging with the work, I might fire them.

#StetChat A4

I don't do coaching (it sounds so difficult with my energy levels)

But this sounds like a great time to reinforce your boundaries! Either that or stop working with them.

It's also not the editor's responsibility to make sure the client makes progress or changes. That's on them.

I would first be swearing so much. Like Chrisjen Avasarala (from The Expanse) levels of swearing.

A3: When it happened recently, I deleted that section of the manuscript because the whole section made no sense anyway and was clearly tacked on. I didn't see any obvious signs that other content in the MS was AI-generated. I think it was a case of voice to text dictation editing?

A4c: Eventually, I fired him as a client. He didn’t seem to know what he wanted from me besides just fixing his punctuation. That, coupled with his nonresponsive behavior and evasive answers made him too stressful to keep working with. #StetChat 3/3

A4b: He rejected the majority of my recommended edits, but still wanted me to continue. He also wouldn’t respond to emails for weeks if not months. At this time, I was a new editor, and I would anxiously keep checking my email throughout the day to see if he’d responded. #StetChat 2/3

A4a: I don’t do coaching, so I can’t fully answer this question. But I did have a particular client very early on who hired me to do a copyedit on his fantasy novel. There were a lot of issues with the novel, which I indicated along with my suggestions of how to remedy those instances. #StetChat 1/3

A3: This has been happening to me with new clients.

I added this to my contact form: "Has any of the manuscript text been generated by an AI tool? Have you used any AI tools for any part of the writing or editing process? If so, please let me know which tools and how you’ve used them."

Me too.

Reedsy (no, I am not shilling for them, just using them as an example) asks writers to disclose AI, asks freelancers to state whether they will use AI (I always check NO), & has "I prefer not to work on projects developed with AI" as a drop-down option for why you're passing.

A4: Time to send a feedback form. If they want to keep paying for my time, they must be getting something out of it, even if I don't understand what it is. Sending the form with open-ended questions will help figure out what's working for them and whether that's something I can tune in to. #StetChat

#StetChat | A4: All my services are pre-paid, so if that's all they want to do, that's on them. I enjoy chatting with writers about writing. Getting paid to do it is just a bonus. ♥

Exactly, it break down the trust between you and the author. #StetChat

Hi Melissa! Glad to have you back for another #StetChat. That's awesome that your publisher has a no AI clause. I wish that was industry standard.
