La Nebulosa Pelícano está en proceso de transformación. IC 5070, su designación oficial, está separada de la mayor Nebulosa Norteamérica por una nube molecular llena de polvo oscuro. La imagen destacada, tomada en Utah, EE.UU., con 25 horas de exposición, resalta detalles de este polvo filamentoso. La Nebulosa Pelícano es objeto de estudio por ser una mezcla especialmente activa de formación estelar y nubes de gas en evolución. La luz de estrellas jóvenes y energéticas está convirtiendo gradualmente el gas frío en caliente, con un frente de ionización visible en naranja brillante en la parte superior derecha. Quedan densas 'extremidades' de gas frío que perdurarán. En millones de años, la Nebulosa Pelícano podría no ser reconocida como tal debido al cambio en la distribución de estrellas y gas, lo que dará lugar a una apariencia completamente diferente.

Pluto in Enhanced Color

Pluto is more colorful than we can see. Color data and high-resolution images of our Solar System's most famous dwarf planet, taken by the robotic New Horizons spacecraft during its flyby in 2015 July, have been digitally combined to give an enhanced-color view of this ancient world sporting an unexpectedly young surface. The featured enhanced color image is not only esthetically pretty but scientifically useful, making surface regions of differing chemical composition visually distinct. For example, the light-colored heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio on the lower right is clearly shown here to be divisible into two regions that are geologically different, with the leftmost lobe, Sputnik Planitia, also appearing unusually smooth. After Pluto, New Horizons continued on, shooting past asteroid Arrokoth in 2019 with enough speed to escape our Solar System completely.

Plutón muestra más colores de los que podemos ver a simple vista. Los datos de color y las imágenes en alta resolución de este conocido planeta enano de nuestro Sistema Solar, captados por la nave robótica New Horizons durante su acercamiento en julio de 2015, han sido combinados digitalmente para ofrecer una vista en color mejorado de este antiguo mundo con una superficie sorprendentemente joven. La imagen en color mejorado destacada no solo es atractiva estéticamente, sino que también es científicamente valiosa al hacer regiones con diferentes composiciones químicas fácilmente distinguibles. Por ejemplo, la región clara en forma de corazón llamada Tombaugh Regio, visible en la parte inferior derecha, se puede dividir en dos áreas geológicamente diferentes, siendo el lóbulo izquierdo, Sputnik Planitia, especialmente liso. Después de Plutón, la nave New Horizons continuó su viaje pasando cerca del asteroide Arrokoth en 2019 y escapando completamente del Sistema Solar.
