Practice the difference between World-Building and Lore.

This starts with knowing what the difference is! (Not just SFF stories, either!)

Lore is(/are) the details of your story world. World-Building is how they fit together and why they matter.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips: Challenge yourself to write a short story. Then challenge yourself to submit it somewhere. Then challenge yourself to keep submitting it until it gets accepted, even if you have to make changes. Get yourself published. You'll fee better.

The secret is out. Now what? Make the truth change what your character has to face, lose, or decide. Give readers a reason to keep reading after the surprise.

Failing is how you learn, not what you are. 100% of successful working writers know how to turn their losses into wins.

There's ONE change you can make right now to turn your situation around; here's how to get there. 👇

Your first page has one job: make the reader curious enough to turn the page.

What does your opening make readers wonder?

Writer's block?

Don't force yourself to write the next chapter.

Open a blank page and write:
“What happens if my character makes the worst possible decision here?”

You don't have to keep it.

Sometimes the wrong idea is what unlocks the right one.

Stuck on your manuscript?

Don't tell yourself:

“I need to write 2,000 words today.”

Try:

“I'll write one scene.”

A smaller target can make the blank page feel much less intimidating.

One scene can become 500 words.
500 words can become a chapter.

Your characters shouldn’t only exist when the plot needs them. Give them little habits, routines, and private rituals that belong to them.
What’s one private habit your favorite character has?

A chapter ending should make readers pause and think, “Wait… what happens next?”

Leave a question. A secret. A little uncertainty.

Give them a reason to turn the page.

What’s your favorite way to end a chapter?
