“I just need this team to work!” she blurted. “It’s all I have! But if there’s nothing to work on, if they don’t need my leadership and guidance … do they even need me?”
“Of course I do!” he insisted, willing back the flames that threatened to rise from his skin as he held her hand. “We all do. Your leadership is even more valuable than -”
“Oh my god,” Stacy whispered. “Is that it? Have I been so desperate to be needed that I’ve created problems for everyone else? I feel like such a -”
“No, Stacy.” The flicker in his pupils flared into blazing flames all around his eyes. “Remember how you led us through the invasion from Alpha Centauri last year? Or when you helped me break Headache’s mind control when I was about to melt down all of HQ? You were the one who recognized the signs that Snakebite’s drinking was getting out of hand and convinced him to talk to you! I’ve always admired your leadership. You inspire me to be a better leader, myself.” He took a deep breath, and chose his next word carefully. “We do need you, Stacy. I’m … I’m the one who should feel ashamed.” The flames abruptly died out.
Sudden worry nearly quenched the burning that his words had created in her heart. “How can you say that? How can you tell me what I’ve done and then forget about everything you do for the world? For us?”

Macro photo of half of a weathered muscle shell lying in water-glistening greenish, peach, and black pebbles. Shell has a touch of pinky-tan towards the tip, dark blue and white lines running like sunrays down the shell, interrupted towards the middle and bottom by curved fissures in the shell which are yellow and brown. Taken on the shore of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Tanaga: Leeches

Enchant me with stormy eyes,
Those words of yours filled with lies...
A promise you'll lend an ear,
You didn't, I cry with tears.
