Astrid Alben] “Now We Circumnavigate Each Other” in "Prototype" 7) this time I will take the wind with me in a brown paper bag and sit with it waiting on a five-barred gate when the hounds are heard and the shrill unlovely note of a horn when the horses follow bearing little sparks of malice bundled up in unappealing red-faced flesh then I shall open my paper bag and watch as all are swept away arms and legs whirling up over woods and hills out across the cliffs and waves dropped into the deeps

beside the long slow waters of the broad Huang he which wander on their journey from Tibet down to the Bohai Sea two boys robed as monks sit watching as the sluggish current flows when one hears a water bird the other sees it dive when one smells the long-awaited rain the other feels the drops upon his face on one boy’s lap an open box from which he takes a lotus flower and gives it to his friend the other takes a lotus flower out of an open box and gives his friend and still the Huang he the box slowly runs towards a wooden argosy which waits immense and stately for the wind and tide to come together and its great adventure to begin

A lifetime can be whiled away at the top of the staircase, ogling back at what’s climbed, longing need for those passed. But a lifetime can be found only somewhere on a middle stair— when your legs are heaviest and your eyes are locked on nothing but the next step that must be taken.
