Alisa Yuko Bernhard interprets Vladimir Jankélévitch's notion of ‘charm' in music in our latest issue. Open access 🔓, too. doi.org/10.1093/aest... #philsky

[Charm does not sound like anything: it does not sound fragile nor labile, nor atmospheric, nor brief, nor mysterious. Charm does not sound, for charm is the connectedness-over-time of the music, which takes on a power to move us. Charm cannot sound fragile; rather, it is charm itself that is fragile, being the magic of the musical moment that is not guaranteed in a performance. The ‘point’—the moment—of the coming-into-being of charm, which is the true present, is an instant; and it is only experienced as the present because of its connection to past moments, which are all gathered together in the totality of a phrase and which are already absent.
- Alisa Yuko Bernhard, A Theory of Musical Intoxication: Charm Chez Vladimir Jankélévitch

The History of Philosophy in China is back from summer break, with a new interview podcast episode: we talk to archeologist Alice Yao about what her discipline can tell historians of philosophy about the Han Dynasty.

I’m not sure about current works exploring the comparison, but it feels like there are parallels with some of the issues discussed by John Gray in ‘The Immortalization Commission: Science & the Strange Quest to Defeat Death’

Hearing you loud and clear, Master K, but just saying - I think it's hilarious to imagine all the big fights panpsychists see on here that (whispers), "don't involve people"?

Well this seems very sad.

(Especially for me and my quest to grow an Evolutionary Philosophy.)

Is academic philosophy really this intolerant of scientific and evolutionary things? I’d love to hear more from academics on this.
