I wasn't sure if anyone would want to come today, but I wanted to be here in case anyone did. #ParshaChat

Huh, that raises a question for me about Elkanah's statement here — I think you could read this as him suggesting that she could be defined by *him*, but not by her own ancestors as he was defined by his own: #ParshaChat

Deeply groggy. Perhaps going to nap a bit after long service and come back to #PaRshaChat when I can focus again
Also, given how large fertility and infertility loom in today's text, I'm putting this link here in case anyone needs it:

A1 Here's one thing I hadn't noticed: the man is defined by (several generations of) his ancestors. The women are defined by their children, and whether or not they have any. That is wrong. #ParshaChat
Q1: Today, we'll look at the haftarah for the first day of Rosh Hashanah, 1Samuel 1-2:10. Looking through the verses, what are your impressions? Does anything surprise you, raise questions, or seem particularly relevant to the theme of caring about people? #ParshaChat
A0: Shanah Tovah #ParshaChat! I'm Rabbi Ruti Regan, here to moderate and looking forward to the conversation. I am very grateful to have this community and for all that we've been able to learn together over the years.
There are apparently going to be fireworks for Riverfest tonight. So that might be good or bad depending on how you feel about fireworks. (I like them but they scare me when I'm not expecting them.) #ParshaChat

A0 Shabbat shalom and l'shanah tova! Onwards to a new year. #ParshaChat
A1 Dennis Fischman in Somerville, MA. I had a lovely Shabbat morning/first day of 5787 service at Temple B'nai Brith this morning, followed by #ParshaChat this afternoon and niece and nephews coming for dinner tonight. What could be bad?
Q0: Introduce yourself! Anything about you, your week, or your interest in #ParshaChat that you'd like to share.
Also: It’s Rosh Hashanah. How is everyone doing?
Our current theme for #ParshaChat text study is reading the text with the assumption that we are supposed to care about people.
If you have questions about #ParshaChat or how to participate, please feel free to @ or DM Rabbi @RutiRegan.bsky.social with questionsv!
Welcome to #ParshaChat, a Jewish space for discussion of the weekly Torah reading (and sometimes other things!)
This week we are studying:

One of my dearest friends is a Jewish army colonel. They knew so many of the Pentagon victims #ParshaChat
My neighbor had boarded a plane at O’Hare that was bound for NYC as part of consulting with clients at WTC. He was stuck on the tarmac for hours. For his clients, no one from the company survived. 🫂🫂🫂 #ParshaChat
I don’t know how stress or emphasis is communicated in Hebrew, aside from repetition. In English, stressing most of these words changes the feeling, usually towards insult. “Surely, this Instruction which I enjoin upon you this day is not too baffling for you, nor is it beyond reach.” #ParshaChat
I’m a poet and my son is a voice actor. It’s a classic exercise to repeat a line stressing different words each time to hear how it changes the meaning #ParshaChat
We've reached the end of the scheduled #ParshaChat, but please feel free to continue the conversation!
