How did the enormous ancient Greek ship Syracusia remove unwanted water from deep inside its wooden hull? One of the most fascinating mechanisms associated with Archimedes was the Archimedean screw, an ingenious device connected with ancient shipbuilding and engineering. #history #engineering

A view of the ruins of Melrose Abbey, a historic Cistercian monastery located in Melrose, Scottish Borders, Scotland.
Only a very small part of the first abbey church survives.
The present building of rose-coloured stone dates almost entirely to the post-1385 rebuilding.
King David I of Scotland (Robert the Bruce's great grandfather) founded Melrose Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland, in 1136.
It was one of a number of abbeys that he set up in the Borders to show both his piety and his power over this contested territory. The Cistercians were drawn to this fertile spot beside the River Tweed by its close associations with St Aidan and St Cuthbert. The monks came from Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire, the Cistercians’ great northern English missionary base.
Monastic life continued at Melrose for the next 450 years. The last monk, John Watson, died around 1590.
Powerful people endowed the abbey richly and it was a highly desirable final resting place.
King Alexander II of Scotland (died 1249) is buried here.
The heart of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots (died 1329) was also buried at Melrose, although his body was interred at Dunfermline Abbey.
After Robert the Bruce died in 1329, his heart was removed, embalmed, and entrusted to his loyal friend Sir James Douglas to carry on a crusade to the Holy Land. Douglas was killed fighting the Moors in Spain, and the heart was brought back to Scotland. The heart was interred at Melrose Abbey.
A lead container holding the heart was found during excavations in 1921 and again in 1996, then reburied in the abbey grounds marked by a stone memorial plaque in 1998.
Melrose’s location put it on the front line of conflict with England during the later Middle Ages: Attacks by Edward I (1300 and 1307) and Edward II (1322) required major repairs. Richard II’s attack in 1385 led to a complete rebuilding of the abbey church. The War of the Rough Wooing (a brutal campaign by Henry VIII) in the 1540s caused further damage.

About 2,100 years ago, a Maeotian horseman aged 25 to 30 was buried at the heart of the Vinogradny 1 necropolis in Russia’s Kuban region, with his horse, his spears, an arrowhead and a gold stater bearing the deified face of Alexander the Great...
