Practical #Accessibility #a11y in action!

🤔 Is the numeronym "a11y" meant for ALL accessibility, or is it specific to #Web #Design?

Exclusion by Design: How Disability Gets Erased from Concept to Product (And How to Fix It)
Michele Williams
Disability exclusion is built into tech systems from the start, not a flaw appearing at the end. It shows up in "futuristic" city designs that ignore wheelchair users and hiring practices that shut out disabled talent, since accessibility is often a final checkbox rather than a guiding principle. This persists because disabled people rarely hold power to challenge it. The talk calls for a "disability mindset" centering disabled perspectives in products, teams, and research, offering strategies to elevate disabled voices in key decisions, drawing on "Accessible UX Research."

Anyone used / heard of Aloud (“The first 508 audit that actually listens”)?

It’s a CC0 project by the IRS that seems to want to be JAWS Inspect for native apps.

My look at README shows it’s got potential but may be grounded in misunderstandings.

Yes, artificial intelligence (AI) functions as a powerful #accessibility tool by converting text into different formats, transcribing speech in real time, and describing visual environments for people with diverse needs #a11y

A double-edged sword: AI boosts independence but needs human oversight

Designing for accessibility means designing for real people, not making assumptions.

In this post, Jennifer Chadwick shares six practical ways designers can make digital experiences work better for blind people.

Includes a checklist of actions to take in #designsystems.
