Thanks #WIPSnips - todays word has highlighted just how often variations of 'neon pulse' appear in the current draft of The Master System!
#AmEditing #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

Phil Grundy did not know where he was.

A few moments ago he was in a dark tower in a spooky forest in the grounds of Romford Castle. He had rescued Charlie, and then... somehow he must have glitched that world out of existence and ended up here, landing awkwardly with an uncomfortable clatter on a floor which was hard and glass-like, denting his armour and bruising his bottom. An angry squall of pixels illuminated the void as they fell around him, drawn into neat lines which then flowed away in neon blue pulses toward the horizon, which was marked with vast towers, pyramids and monoliths of bright green and red, which struck a weird note of familiarity despite the utter weirdness of the entire place. 'Fascinating,' he Spocked, peering into the glassy floor at the gridlines which glowed deep within it, all silver and angular, and giving off the same backlit Tron vibes as the neon pulses and monochrome background illustration. 'What is this place?'

Ngl, I was thinking of the goo in Ghostbusters 2 with this snip.
A brief glimpse of the god inside Slate. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

There was no longer any flash, now Slate's eyes pulsed a vivid shade of blue. Brighter than a clear, summer sky. For something that should have been a comfort, all Halla now felt was a chilling fear. Slate's face changed subtly. It became blanker and her skin was clear but also had a waxy sheen. A mask that had pushed its way up through her pores.

"They're trying to free her."

The voice wasn't Slate's and the face was one Halla had seen many times in the Orbo. Cracked and weathered above temple entrances. The Fifth Sister, Calchas. Halla caught her breath, feeling cold air rattle through her teeth. She had witnessed a god so many times, but the Sixth Sister had been cowed and pathetic. This god was none of that. Her eyes blazed with such a heat that Halla expected Slate's face to shrivel.

Instead, it melted.

Slathers of pink slime began to run down Slate's head, from forehead to chin.

The word for October 12th is "pulse"

From Atlas Rising

General Rourke vs being asked nicely

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

As he followed her, Rourke pulled the folded paper from his pocket and read it.

“I need you leading the task force on this. Working directly for me. Please.” The Prime Minister’s neat handwriting continued, “Bernadette will show you to your office.”

        Rourke stopped walking.
        Bernadette did too.
‘He needs you.’ She made her way back to stand beside him. ‘Please?’
       ‘I’m only here to see—’
‘She’s waiting for you in your office, sir.’
        Then she set off again.
       Rourke watched her.
       Thinking hard, pulse accelerating.
       Then he followed.
       They’d said please, after all.

Took a bit of a break, but I’m back with this scary snippet of Askel with his latest prey from Raw
cw violence

The scent of blood hit Askel’s nose, and he found himself staring face to face with terrified prey.

Baring his fangs, he dug right into the merchant’s jugular.

When the merchant tried to scream, Askel grabbed his jaw. Silence. Silence him so that he could feed. And feed he did.

Askel never let a single drop of blood go to waste. He sank his teeth deeper into tender flesh. Drafts of blood were gulped down in time with a fading pulse. He crushed the man’s jaw, forgetting that he was still gripping down on it.

"Couldn't sleep?"
Marla heard the voice and leapt to her feet, a scream catching in her throat. Her pulse was kicked into overdrive, and she searched desperately for the source of danger.
He stood up at the far end of the porch, and as her panic subsided, Marla realized it was Grady.

When you have to make THAT call.

#WIPSnips #WritingPrompts #WriteSky

It wasn’t like he was expecting his contact to answer. At best, he could request a call back that may never come.
Fine.
With deliberate care, he set up the comm to minimize field of view and logged into SIDNet. And was honestly surprised that his access still worked.
It was limited, as a quick check confirmed. No access to the sort of information that might help him.
But apparently, for SID, there was no such thing as an ex-asset.
The man he wanted wasn’t listed, of course. But he remembered the comm code. It was one of those things that had become etched in his memory, probably impossible to erase.
The connect screen came up, gray and ominous.
Fifteen more seconds, then he could leave a message and go back to sleep.
Except that the fucking call connected and amber eyes regarded him from the second-most terrifying face he’d ever encountered.
He sat up straighter.
“Sir.”
“Operative Rutherford.”
And it turned out Admiral Qamar was no less intimidating over comm than he was in person.
“Just Ed these days, Sir.”
And he’d just corrected an Admiral. Necessary. But, holy shit.
“Very well… Ed. Any particular reason for this call? Or were you just feeling social?”
His mouth had gone dry and his pulse was fluttering like a trapped bird. But he kept his face and voice neutral.
“I need to request your help, Sir. As it affects Ri—I mean, Spook, Sir.”
His phrasing was deliberate. The admiral and Rina were close. Ed was banking on that fact, although the silence felt oppressive. Finally Qamar sat back and inclined his head.
“Very well, Ed. Tell me everything. You wouldn’t want me to get bored.”

I already had that but I like it a lot. Vela attending a concert/rave. In 'Cloudgazer' #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The crowd had gathered in front of a round metal stage, topped by a shell of dark steel girders, festooned with lights, projectors and all sorts of concert type tech. Sprayed cool waterfog was sliced by teal lasers.
The deep reverberating bass pulse slowly started to fade, giving way to crowd chatter and nightly bird cries for a moment.
Tonights festival opened with the first live act among many this night. A Nihydron trio was taking the stage with their electronic drumkit and a huge synth-harp featuring a water-filled chassis as centerpiece.
A truly otherworldly soundscape filled the pit, led on a narrow path by synth-beats, like a line of lights guiding through dark sea. Vela closed her eyes and let the melody carry her through the Nihydron hommeworld's dark ocean trenches, bioluminescent passages and lush kelp forrests.

I find myself without a pulse, so am going to have to synonym my way out of this one. A couple of days #WIPSnips ago, our travellers in space and time found themselves thrown off a galleon into a rowing boat. This is how they got there.

Amberflame saw them and snarled.
“Over the side and into the rowing boat, and be quick about it.”
“We can’t,” protested Eloise. “We’ve still got our hands tied behind our backs. How do you expect us to climb down?”
“Who said anything about climbing?”
Before they had a chance to do anything about it, including complain, Amberflame snapped an order. The crew seized them and manhandled them over the side. Surprisingly, the boat didn’t capsize. Unsurprisingly, it hurt.
“Aaaaghh.”
Thump.
“Ouch.”
Smack.
“Uhhhh.”
“Bleedin’ ‘ell.”
Thud.
“Waaaah.”
“Who’s got their leg in my face?”
“Probably the same git what ‘as their elbow stickin’ in me ribs.”
“Whose foot is this?”
“Stop rocking the boat, or you’ll tip us over.”
“Whoever has got their hand there had better move it, Recklessly.”
“Sorry, Weezie, it’s my hand. I’m trying to turn onto my side.”
Tim managed to get his head above the side of the boat and was startled by what he saw.

Beloved Mama,

I suspect you will curse me greatly anon, for I believe that I shall engulf you with letters and missives enough to fill a volume of epic depth, engorged by great detail and surgical precision in regards to my stomach movements. For I have experienced not only my first storm, but my second and third in close succession. I must confess, I did not carry myself with much dignity and spent many a day within the confines of my cabin, unable to face food nor company. Nursey cared for me as best she could, but even her tinctures were unable to quiet the turmoil within. A bucket became my closest companion, the bed my only sanctuary.

And yet, upon the passing of the storms, I came to understand the allure of the sea of which my husband spoke at length and with abiding longing, for the ocean has a beauty of its own that should I attempt to describe, I fear my words would be found wanting and puerile. The ocean is vast, and one can look upon the surface in all directions and see not a thing but the waves and the sky that surround us. It has a peace to it that one cannot express to give it the respect it is due. The voyage is long, far longer than I had anticipated, and long days and weeks yet remain ahead of us, but I shall face it with the grace that you and Papa instilled in me.

The other day, it was to my very great pleasure to observe a sperm whale. A beast for which I had hoped was not so named in accordance with the unfortunate and lurid expectations one would naturally have, yet I was informed that the beast was, indeed, so named for the reasons one would, naturally, expect. This both repulsed and fascinated me in equal measure.

From WIP2 - Wishing You Knew

Shannon's having a moment.

#WIPSnips #QueerWriters #WritingPrompts #Shaqueline #SapphicWriters #sapphicauthors #WriteSky #Sapphic

Then Jacqueline’s first notes rang through the room, beginning in a rich, smoky contralto before rising into a warm, silvery mezzo. The voice Shannon knew from records suddenly felt different—more unguarded, more alive than she’d ever imagined, carrying a confidence that seemed effortless.
Shannon’s breath caught. Every muscle, every synapse, every tiny hair on her body snapped to attention.
Her focus narrowed until there was only Jacqueline, her guitar, and Shannon herself. When Jacqueline’s gaze found hers, something inside Shannon’s chest shifted. She knew it was only a look, but for one impossible moment, she imagined Jacqueline was singing just for her.
When the song ended, a quiet round of applause filled the room. At least she thought it did. Their hands were moving, but she couldn’t hear anything over the pounding of her pulse.

🌶️ CW: SEX

#pulse (throb) from Far Worlds, Book Three of the Lonely Ship Saga.

Young lovers Demi (a heat-drinking undead) and Aki (a cat-boy) take measures to power the ship.

The couple’s chosen den, the long storage cupboard that had last been used as a cell for the Flamefall soldier Sleighbor, also lacked the comfort that she liked in medical or an empty bunk room. But she had learned how to lock this door from the inside using the tactical lean of a support splint, so it was at least private. And the clothing forming a fabric matting beneath her wasn’t uncomfortable when shared with someone else. In any case, Aki had approached her boldly just now and taken her hand with the serious proclamation that, ‘The ship requires anima, so we have to go and have sex.’ Her lovely, shy boy was rarely so forward, and she had to reward him so that he’d do it again some time.
Aki thrust himself against her naked pussy with the low growl of a hunting cat. He clearly enjoyed the pressure against his cock, and Demi enjoyed the heat of the blood rumbling in his throbbing tip. His sleek, black tail was swishing above them. He laid a hand on her bare arm and slid it upwards towards her shoulder, and it felt wonderful.
But they’d achieve nothing like this. Demi and Aki had recently been experimenting with substances that could replicate the slickness of a human vagina. Demi had no idea where you could discreetly purchase such a substance, so they had needed to get creative. Something that didn’t drain their resources meant most of the surplus in medical was out, and keeping their skin healthy crossed off a lot of engineering. Therese would have known something good, but…

He could, if he were honest, understand why Mother sat aghast; he could not pretend, to himself or to her, that he had not felt the allure, that his pulse had not quickened when it had still seemed possible that he might one day be master of so much, of a place easily ten times the size, and ten times the worth, of Ferrowby.

Heartbeat for pulse today. From Second Carpathians. Fun fact about me: two separate times in my life I had work, if briefly, as a professional eel feeder. At least sort of. It's a long story.

She opened her mouth to respond, forgetting for a moment that she was underwater. Water rushed in, and she convulsed, lungs spasming, filled with the horrible certainty that she had just drowned herself.
Except she could breathe. Without trouble, because it wasn’t water but oxygenated gel, the kind of thing she had sucked into her lungs so many times during high-gee transits.
“Who has?” she asked.
“Magellanix,” the moray said. It twisted and turned grotesquely in the remains of Alejandro’s rotting skull. “You have been chosen.”
“I don’t understand,” she said.
“Of course, you do. They’ve come to take you home.”
“Take me… home?” she repeated dully, still not comprehending. “It can’t be. You’re wrong. They would never have picked me.”
“The best and brightest.” The eel was mocking her now, its voice unmistakably Alejandro’s, but when had that happened? “Congratulations,” it added, grinning.
“But…” Could it be? Was such a thing possible? In an instant, she knew with utter clarity it was true. “I’ll come back. I promise!”
“No, you won’t. No one ever does. You’ll forget this place in a heartbeat, Captain.”
“But…” she stammered, confused. “A heartbeat is a long time!” Thinking — mine only beats twelve times a minute.

#WIPSnips | pulse

For context here, this is post experimental ritual that backfired badly enough to destroy Archer's vision in his remaining eye - luckily, in a way that his healing could fix if he got the blood for it. As for where that blood came from...

( saranadosfiction.com/2022/12/03/s... )

Archer came to with a start, his mouth still fixed on Sabbat’s wrist. He had no idea how much time had passed – usual, when drinking from a willing volunteer, but still unsettling – but, judging by the white and grey blur that had replaced the previous black and red blur which had swallowed his vision, it’d been long enough that the blood had started to do its work.

*And more than long enough for something to have gone wrong.*

He pulled away, running his thumb gently over the incision in order to ensure that enough saliva stayed behind to clot the wound properly.

“Sabbat?”

No response.

“Sabbat? Can you hear me?”

The skin under his hand was still warm, thank the gods, and there was a pulse beating under his fingertips – but it was threadier and slower than it should have been, sluggish where it should have been strong.

“Sabbat?”

Still nothing.

With mounting panic (and cursing the speed of healing that meant that he was still all but working blind) he ran his hands over the assassin’s chest and face, searching for any sign of life other than that pulse beating so worryingly slowly at his wrist.

*Please. Please don’t let this be the end of it. Please.*
