His many works, providing a framework for conceptualizing perinatal and transpersonal experiences, are a profound and useful starting point for an investigation into this area. In his use of LSD beginning in 1956 for psychotherapy, called psycholytic therapy, he discovered four levels of experience of the unconscious: the sensory, the biographical, the perinatal, and the transpersonal. He noted a tendency for growth and healing to occur in a progressive way through these levels. The sensory band is the level of expanded sensory awareness and is usually initially encountered by participants.

A Call to Know Instead However, this new evidence and new paradigm are not at all at odds, let alone at war with — as much of the constructs of fundamentalist theology are — our traditional scientific ways or findings. For, similar to the way in which the earth is flat in the particular environs of one’s daily life, and for a considerable distance surrounding, the Newtonian-Cartesian paradigm likewise has its limited usefulness. But if we are to get moving on our species’s continuing adventure into discovering the nature of reality, we must acknowledge its limitations. What bodes against this happening is an incredible, Jupiterian weight of egoic, economic, and time investment in the old (N-C) paradigm that pushes most people to insist upon its ultimate validity. Historically, this has been the unfortunate fate of every emergent paradigm facing the entrenched one. Decades and even centuries have often been required while the new worldview has been put “on hold” until entire, invested generations have left the scene ... totally regardless of the quality, quantity, or indisputability of the new evidence (Kuhn, 1970). Page 27 Victims Du Jour By the way, I might mention that while genuine sexual assault and child sexual abuse is a reality that has long been with us and is only now really coming to light (thankfully), the similarity of this early perinatal experience of ungentle mouth clearing to sexual assault may have something to do with the epidemic of reports of infant sexual abuse that are coming out of counselor’s therapy rooms. Confused interpretations of these reports can happen because most counselors and psychotherapists are ignorant of birth and perinatal trauma and yet more and more of them are allowing bits and pieces of regressive techniques into their standard professional arsenals. In addition, they throw in these techniques, most often, without qualification or experience with these techniques, and oftentimes out of knowledge gained solely from books or second-handedly ... not to mention rarely, because of professional arrogance, having experienced or undergone these regressions themselves.

Anyway, many days later they are down to only a tiny amount of water and no food; their skin is burnt from an oppressive sunlight; their lips are parched. Indeed, Patricia is unconscious from the ordeal. Joe is not much better. The situation is depicting the sufferings of life, of course.

Hence during that extra time of dependence and even for a while afterward, there are additional emotional needs that human mothers have to take care of that their sister mothers do not have to do. Babies are often in pain; mothers must coo, pacify, hum, rock, and make nice. You can see where this is a considerable prod for even more mother-infant interaction and communication — both verbally, audibly, in the direction of increasing facility in language, and visually, by means of facial cues and body language. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foundation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups.

Alongside this I stressed the requirement — emanating from this conjunction of an impending apocalypse and the discovery of a more positive, more cooperative, wiser, and more environmentally protective human nature — that people re-discover that more primal human nature. For that matter, what do we make of the ability of fish and amphibious animals, including sharks, bees, dolphins, and platypuses, to sense electrical fields. This is called electroreception. Do people ever stop to think of what a thousand years is? Remember, a thousand years ago, Europe was in feudalism still; the Black Death had not yet occurred even. Imagine twenty-five times that amount of time that somehow the governments of the world will cooperate to guard the massive amounts of nuclear waste we have created and are continuing to create. Surely you see how ludicrous that is. Now imagine five hundred times that amount of time that humans will still have to sidestep this waste or die. Yet we continue to excrete massive amounts of it into our globe and even after the Fukushima meltdowns to push for building more plants. We have watched baby dolphins by the hundreds washing up on Gulf and European coasts and the creation of hundreds of dead zones — some as large as a hundred miles across — in our seas. British Petroleum (BP), the perpetrator of the Gulf Oil spill, engaged in further criminal activity afterward by using toxic chemicals to disperse the oil rather than to collect it. The dispersants themselves are toxic.

We must make the effort to see clearly, to see fairly, to break through our cultural conditioning, to reach out to all those living/nonliving, to all that is threatened by our misproliferation of deeds.
