About a possible mer-person civilization being out in the wider sea, that just does not know anything about the landed Alliance, or vis versa.

Otherwise, there could be anything out there… leviathans, krakens, sea dragons, the possibilities are endless.

There’s a fair amount of coastal fishing in the Dagger Sea, and slightly beyond it into more open waters past Farshore, but never out of sight of the coast.

As a result, little is known about what lies in deeper waters. I actually have a running joke with my Aloha Reader

The oceans of Hell are FULL of life forms!

I invented none of them.

Mermaids, selkies, dog-faced dolphins, weird whales, kraken... if it's in a mediaeval bestiary or carved into a gothic relief, we've probably got it.

We see very few of them, however.

I had an idea at one point that never made it to paper for some ocean creatures.

If there was something weird in the water, it would be a porpoise of some kind. Orca are known to heave themselves up on beaches to eat seals. The other thing would be an expansion of...

AElit is a hidden island on Earth, so its oceans have the same things ours does. Though there may be some creatures native to only its shores? 🤔

17) Ocean animals

Oh sure, loads of animals live in Zada's oceans. The same ones you find on Earth! Plus ones you don't anymore!

Plus dragons. There are two kinds of marine dragons:

The sea dragons live in warm tropical seas.

The polar dragons live in the polar seas.

#TheDragonblood: The oceans are home to merfolk. Otherwise, the contents of the oceans are pretty standard as far as I've decided.

#ThroughTheCracks: Earth's oceans have taken a hit, and are home to much less diversity of species.

Dunkleosteus has changed a lot over the years. This photo of my Schliech® model has the older, outdated exposed armor look. We only have the head and body armor, so they've been subject to much speculation.

But, they've had 370 million years in my setting... 🧵

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Time to gush about the oceans in the Scaleshifter world! Dragons and monsters and squid, oh my!

First off: Black dragons! They were granted gifts from the gods to be able to hold their breath for SO long it’s ridiculous. They can hang out on the ocean floor all day!

17: The oceans of Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social) are teaming with life, including all varieties of fish, cephalopods, aquatic mammals, and other creatures. Sailors, especially, are prone to thinking that there are even massive sea monsters, whose...

Creating creatures is the best part of writing SFF. 😁

Some of my favorites on Maris include squild (highly intelligent cephalopods), sabre sharks (pack-hunters), and feather whales (flying fish-whale hybrids).

All three present unique obstacles to fishing.

There's a lot of the animals you might expect to find in the ocean, and there are a few weird ones too. I haven't gotten around to most of these other than the various marine mammals (there are basically two groups that took the whale route). Listing them all

In the Elvish pantheon the god of the seas is called Owattry, while in the Glord pantheon he is called Ozívah, but it's the same "god".

In reality he's the spirit of a very powerful dark elf who can command water. He lives where he died, out in the sea.

Pretty much every species of marine life irl exists within the Library's shores. In fact, *more* because mass extinction via industrialization and its consequences hasn't occurred (thanks magic)

The wacky stuff comes after you leave the Library's waters...

I’ve mentioned that Arum’s currency is pearl-based. They also produce several purple dyes from the mollusks along the coast.

There are several animals that live in the Sun-Drop Sea.
I’ve been vague about them for a while, but of named creatures

Purple-Lipped Bivalves (similar to the Tridacna maxima).
There are also several species of cetacean 🪡
