ENtrance to underground room: Detail: Site-specific installation titled "Oak Room" by Andy Goldsworthy, 2009, created for Château Lacoste, Provence, France. A room within the château's stone buildings whose walls are entirely lined with large panels of densely packed, interlocking oak leaves — thousands of dried leaves pressed flat and layered to cover every surface from floor to ceiling, the warm amber, brown, and ochre tones of the dried foliage transforming the interior into something between a natural archive and a living membrane. The leaves are arranged with Goldsworthy's characteristic attention to pattern and flow, creating a surface that reads simultaneously as geological strata, as wallpaper, and as accumulated time made visible. Light catches the varied textures and tones of the individual leaves while the overall effect is one of deep, enveloping warmth. The work is characteristic of Goldsworthy's practice of bringing the materials and processes of the natural world into built or institutional spaces, asking the two to hold each other in tension — the ephemeral and the permanent, the organic and the architectural, the forest and the room.
