Without touching on the topic deeply, a long Medieval History discussion at my college was whether serfdom counted as slavery. The professor pointed out, "We should note the two systems coexisted and the serfs and slaves both saw differences. Like today's workers." #history #Medieval #serfdom

The graveslab known as 'The Brethren', in Jerpoint Abbey Kilkenny, is particularly interesting as it is one of very few incised graveslabs to depict knights in Ireland.

#Ireland #Medieval #SpéirGhorm

A grey stone graveslab that has incised portraits of a knight in a helmet holding a sword (on the left), his head reclines on a pillow. A second knight in mail but no helmet holds a sword to the right

Happy October! The most common #LaboursOfTheMonth was sowing seeds. This fellow is rather earlier than our usual 15th C manuscripts but we liked his attitude. That frame can hardly contain him! (MS N.19, f. 4r) #Medieval #MedievalSky

Painting of a man in a medieval manuscript. Text with notes can be seen on the left. He is surrounded by a gold frame that fits around him, rather than him fitting inside the frame. Indeed, one foot steps on the gold frame. He hold a basket which is hung around his neck. His right arm is off to his side with his hand cupped. He probably holds seeds he is about to toss.

'this novel offers a portrait of Marguerite of Anjou that is both vivid and compelling, steeped in atmosphere yet driven by character.' #Review

At what point did the Scots first see themselves as a distinct kingdom, separate but equal to that of England?

Scottish sovereignty and independence have #medieval origins.

What years does "medieval" mean?

To members of the public: 1200 to 1650
To historians: 480 to the last year that they study.
