A great blue heron stands in profile on a flat, light-brown rock at the water's edge, facing left. The bird has a long, pointed yellowish beak with a dark upper ridge, a white face and throat, a black cap running from the bill back over the crown, and a warm reddish-tan neck. Its chest shows pale, streaked plumage, while its back and folded wings are a mix of slate gray, black, and fine white streaks. The heron's long dark leg and webbed foot are planted on the rock, its body slightly hunched in a resting pose. Behind it, a wide river flows, its surface a soft, slightly blurred grayish-green with gentle ripples and small white streaks of current. In the upper background, a large dark rock rises out of the water, and a smaller pale boulder sits to the left. At the lower right edge of the frame, a few thin green leafy stems grow from the rock. The setting is the James River in Richmond, Virginia.
