Long-billed Thrasher, Laguna Atascosa NWR, March 2026
#birds #originalcontent #photography 📷🪶

A Long-billed Thrasher is perched on a small limb. It is mostly in the sunlight, but shadows intrude. The bird's yellow eye and bold dark streaks on its white chest and belly make it stand out. The face is gray and the wing and tail are a warm brown. It has long legs and a longish curved beak.

I have a feeling I have posted these before, but they fit the theme, so...

For #BirdOfTheDay theme #LightAndShadow, here's an Eastern kingbird poking its beak out into the sunlight.

🦉 🪶

Perched on the end of a spiky pine branch, a yellow-rumped warbler catches the early morning sunrise. Its body faces the camera and its head is turned to our right. Reddish-orange light warms the side of its head, breast, and tail feathers. Behind the bird is a flat, light blue sky.

That's the #BirdOfTheDay theme, I gather, because that's what everyone is posting

I titled the photo Noir Egret, because there are the elements of film noir: light and shadows, disorienting angles, black and white

A congregation of White Ibis, which has a distinctive down-curved reddish pink bill and legs, is walking in green grass along the bank of the blue lake.

Interesting information:
This ibis is almost entirely white, save for the black-tipped wings and brilliant reddish pink legs and bill. The bare skin around their blue eyes is also reddish pink. Juveniles (fall through winter) are brown above and white below with a streaky brown neck. The legs and bill of juveniles are orange-pink. Immatures (first summer birds) are splotchy brown and white above as they molt into adult plumage.
An ibis is a medium-sized wading bird with a long neck, spindly legs, and a distinctive long, downward-curving bill. Colors vary by species. The White Ibis is brilliant white with black wingtips, the Scarlet Ibis is vivid red, and the Glossy Ibis has dark, iridescent chestnut and purple feathers. They live in warm regions worldwide, frequenting shallow wetlands, marshes, lakes, mangroves, and mudflats.
Ibises are carnivorous. They eat aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans (like crabs and shrimp), insects, small fish, and occasionally small frogs or snakes. Ibises are highly social birds. They forage, fly, and breed in large, sometimes vast, colonies.
They usually build compact stick nests low in trees, shrubs, or dense reeds near water, often sharing nesting spaces with herons or spoonbills.

Scarlet tanager examining some berries. Norwich VT, August 2026

As per @alan678.bsky.social's theme of #LightAndShadow for #BirdOfTheDay

#ECK #Photography #Nature #Birds #Wildlife

This image shows a non-breeding male scarlet tanager (I think!) perched on a branch and examining some berries. The bird appears a little left and up from the center of the frame, facing toward the viewer with its head down and tail up so that we have an excellent view of its back and tail feathers. The light comes from the left, so its tail is in sunlight and its head in shadow. The branch it's perched on angles down slightly from right to left, and has multiple secondary branches coming off from it. All the branches are covered with leaves and numerous small green berries tinged with red and with red spots at their center. The image is finished with a pleasing green bokeh from distant foliage.
