"Panda Excess"

This #LaborDay, the working people of #Honolulu need relief, not a gilded spectacle. We deserve leaders who take our struggles seriously, and who treat the #CostOfLiving like the crisis it is.

#art #cartoon #digitalart #editorialcartoon #illustration #workingfamilies #pandadiplomacy

On Labor Day, when we're supposed to be honoring working people, Honolulu's political leadership is busy chasing a fantasy—not affordable housing, not lower utility bills, not relief for families juggling two and three jobs just to stay afloat. No, the big dream is pandas.

My latest editorial cartoon, "Panda Excess," captures the absurdity: Mayor Rick Blangiardi proudly presenting the Honolulu Zoo's newest attraction, an expensive, high-maintenance panda from China. The panda sits on a carved wooden throne, adorned with regalia reminiscent of Chinese empires of the past, enjoying bamboo and the artificial chill of a giant A.C. unit mounted nonsensically on the wall behind it. A $1 million-per-year price tag is attached to its throne.

But the most telling detail is the guest the Mayor is showing the panda to: a struggling Honolulu resident, stooped over under a massive boulder labeled "Honolulu Cost of Living," drenched in sweat, holding a tiny battery-powered fan to his face.

The contrast couldn't be starker. Working parents across the county labor through two or three jobs just to keep the lights on, while the City's leadership publicly courts an exotic, financially draining spectacle. We are told this is about excitement, tourism, prestige, maybe even diplomacy. But none of that pays rent. None of that lowers grocery bills. None of that helps the housekeeper, the teacher, the nurse, or the gig worker trying to survive in one of the most expensive places in America.

For people already carrying the boulder of Honolulu's cost of living on their backs, a panda is not public service. It is performance—and an expensive one at that.

Ohio Issue 3 is on the ballot November 3rd. It puts the voter photo ID rule into the state constitution. Ohio's had that rule since 2023. Nothing changes. It just stops being something you can undo.

They sat in the room and said out loud it could block ballots for millions. The rule went out anyway.

One bad barcode kills the whole batch — and Maricopa mails two million at a time.

Zero-percent failure policy.
