Zorrik choked. “Silva? You’re a demon-worshiper?” “Have you forgotten Saint Podru’s words during my Ordeal?” Kahyla asked. “Repeat them so Despard believes me.” “I haven’t forgotten, m’am. Before the Prelate sealed the record, I copied the entire transcript into my personal journal.” Zorrik closed his eyes and called to mind his smudged hasty handwriting. “‘Kahyla can marry you, if she likes, in addition to that Silva follower Despard. Just make sure you find a Silva priest for that ceremony.’” Zorrik paused under Kahyla’s glare. “‘Or Parkith’s sister will be pissed.’” At last the edge disappeared from his side as Despard’s laughter echoed off the high ceiling of the receiving room. “Blessed by Her Luck, it’s real,” Despard spun Kahyla in his arms. “Mine, you’re mine!” Despite Kahyla’s smile, she shouldn’t allow it, a tien-queen mishandled by her own guard. Hardly his primary concern but perhaps King Tauno was right to send her into exile.
