🗑️ #Yeast nuclear ubiquitin ligase Uls2 has surprising side job: tagging cytosolic proteins for degradation. Orphaned/ oxidatively damaged proteins aggregate in nucleus & become SUMO-dependent substrate ➡️ = compartment-spanning QC pathway

🫧 Autophagosome membranes don't just grow by lipid transfer. #Yeast cryo-ET shows vesicles clustering around and fusing with the phagophore rim during expansion, a contribution that was previously attributed only to the nucleation stage

50 years baking and still make mistakes.

Put in the fridge to bake in the morning but after a few hours it was already overproofed. Okay, not a huge mistake, but still…

#food #cooking #baking #bread #yeast

One large and one small half-and-half tin loaves on a rackSide on of the larger loaf showing the sagged crown where it had slumped from over proving and started to deflate Cut off the endFull face of the cut end of the loaf showing mostly tight even crumb but obviously smaller gas bubbles top and bottom, where it is visibly denser, sure sign of being over proofed

What if the key to designing better synthetic #yeast #allotetraploids for industry is not only the nuclear genome, but also the #mitochondria? 🧬⚡

⛓️‍💥 In #Yeast a broken helicase can be worse than no helicase. Inactive Hrq1 binds DNA but can't unwind it= 🙅 inter-strand crosslink repair. ➡️ Sheds light on how partial LoF mutations in human RECQL4 may similarly disrupt genome stability.

✂️ The spliceosome has to shed Dib1 before it can start cutting RNA. New #Yeast research shows Dib1's C-terminal tail is what keeps it docked near the catalytic core via Prp8 and Prp31, and losing that tail is enough to kill the cell.

The first non-chaotic(?) week of the semester is here when we can actually get work done! We welcome two new PhD students in the Lab, Soulafa from 🇸🇾 and Gergő from 🇭🇺 who will work with #yeast and other fungi! Good luck and welcome:)

🛟 When DNA breaks in #Yeast, Tel1 phosphorylates Rad9, driving its self-assembly to hold broken ends together & steer repair toward homologous recombination. A Tel1 FAT-domain variant reveals this axis by rescuing end-tethering defects

Naumovozyma castellii is a telomerase-deficient #yeast strain that can bypass senescence by rapidly activating an alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) mechanism.

New work in #G3journal shows that subtelomeric regions play a key role in the effective activation of ALT.

A library of #yeast strains captures a substantial fraction of genomic variation while also avoiding the confounding effects of population structure.
