Julia's husband unravels:

Hugh spent all day speaking urgently with his colleagues in the Education Executive at Central London University. Sometimes she could hear him shouting from his home office: “Then we will need more police and security guards!” His students had become the enemy, an unruly, threatening presence, their own uncertainty and abandonment ramping up their terror and anger.

Okay, the clanging of cow and goat bells in the Alps may seem romantic, but it can also keep you up at night!

Sleep deprived.

Food on Mars:

Here, the taste of sweetness and saltiness is diluted. But, the dimmed sweetness of the tuber comes first, mellow and nutty, then the warmth kicks in—chili, just enough to wake my mouth. Onion too, sweet and sharp, though probably rehydrated. I doubt it was fresh, unless Hydroponics has managed spring onions in the vertical stacks. The chili might have come from the dome as well, or possibly one of the freeze-dried stores. Still, it tasted like my memory of home-cooked food. Not exact—but close enough to pass for comfort.

Aya in her consulting room:

The prints hang silently on the walls: Kandinsky’s figures suspended against the sky, Amarok’s ship unmoving on the sea, and Hokusai’s wave cresting, but never breaking.
The duckweed floats in its half-globe on the desk.
The horizontal window glows gold and tan.
The room is silent except for the constant mechanical whisper. I feel the dosimeter against my neck.
I sit in my chair, take out my glass and prepare for my second patient of the day.

Communication from Mars:

. If I record a holo to send to him, we would be cushioned by the emotional dead space, the lag. The fourteen minutes to reach him, the fourteen minutes for him to reach me. That old-fashioned kettle time. The absurd safety of communication orchestrated and delayed, no spontaneity, no risk. If I recorded a holo to send to him, I would miss him so terribly I would want to go home.
