The train halted in Cosel on September 12 at about 14.00 and approximately 200 able-bodied men under the age of 50 had to get off the train. From Cosel they were taken by three or four trucks to forced labour camps in Upper Silesia: Niederkirch, Gogolin or Annaberg and would be transferred to other work camps.
There they were awaited by “a bunch of brown shirts with swastikas” according to Jonas Pampel, one of the survivors who was deported together with his wife and 2 daughters (13 and 15 y/o). He added that the train travelled straight from Westerbork to Cosel and that when the men had left the train and it resumed its journey, there was terrible wailing and crying. The train with the remaining deportees arrived in Auschwitz later that day.
Pampel's wife and children were murdered on arrival.
According to Guus Luijters, the author of ‘In Memoriam’ where he documents the deportation and murder of children from the Netherlands, there were 175 children on this transport. The youngest was Willy Henny Scheffer, 5 months old. He was gassed on arrival together with his mother. His father died two years later in Auschwitz sub(work)-camp Blechhammer.
As with all these transports, whole families were take and murdered. Barend Buitenkant (9 years old) was send on this transport together with his two brothers of 11 and 13 and their parents. Barend ,his brothers and his mother were gassed on arrival and their father died in Seibersdorf concentration camp in 1943.
When the 18th transport from Westerbork arrived at Auschwitz at selection, 26 men and 34 women were admitted into the camp. The other deportees were murdered within hours in the gas chambers.
10 people survived this transport.
