We need a Radical Pedestrian movement.

I moved to Portland in part because it's a lot more walkable than other places I've lived. But even here you encounter the #WarOnWalking. There are places in NoPo where you have to walk for an hour to get a mile away, because of intervening freeways.

I took this in while working in Riga Latvia years ago. A busy arterial road cutting off the downtown from the waterfront, and this is the way to get to the water for pedestrians. On the one hand, at least they have a “connection”…on the other hand it turns pedestrians into mole people. #WarOnWalking

The pedestrian connection is an underground walkway, with stairs downward, and a tight, dark connection under the road, raising issues of safety and comfort and relegating pedestrians to second class citizens with all the priority going to cars and drivers. #UrbanTruth

If your elected municipal representative prioritizes making space for the “perceived convenience” of drivers behind the wheel of their cars, trucks or SUVs over the equity and safety of vulnerable road users; they are a active participant on the #WarOnWalking (which also includes rolling and riding)

To be clear, the #WARonWALKING is a big tent that includes the war on safe and efficient urban biking, on workable and well connected public transit, on all ages and abilities accessibility, and more.

It’s a war against better cities with more real options, and a war for car dependency. #UrbanTruth

Once we open our eyes to the damage done by the #WarOnWalking, it’s impossible NOT to see it. At every scale, in every detail & decision, affecting every constituency, and influencing every element of culture.

And when we try to improve things, they have the audacity to claim there’s a #WarOnCars.
