“You’re a…surprise.” Feriel made an awkward little nod, as though ducking his head and then thinking better of it. He gave Ragheiyont a long, thoughtful look. The encroaching sunset turned his gaze from aqua to a deeper underwater blue-green. “Those really are lovely horn caps.”

Ill jump in for this one, cuz this snip is cute. Nora has a secret crush on Bayle, the butler, and… uh… doesn’t quite register that he’s asking her on a ‘date’ when he proposes discussing business over dinner.

This is the first scene I actually wrote for this story 🤣🤦‍♀️
Nora 🤝 me.

"What can go wrong?"
"We could destroy a priceless, antique, luxury orbital in its entirety, killing people in the process, but not dying in the catastrophe ourselves, thus having to live with what we've done for the rest of our lives.”
He paused in his dish-washing for a moment, speechless, and his expression went blank. Then he shook it off and started washing again. "I meant over dinner."
"Oh."
"What could go wrong over dinner?" He smiled again and turned his full charm towards her. "The Alfredo gets cold?”
"Food poisoning?" She said, almost at the same time. His smile fell again and he turned off the sink. I'm such a ray of sunshine. Nora frowned nervously.
"I'm sorry. That would be lovely. I’ve brought a gift.”
She patted the bucket. He bustled through to the kitchen, wiping his hands, sleeves rolled up and tailcoat safely stowed over its corner chair. She tried not to look too long at his bare forearms.

Lanta, the town I didn't name until I wrote 7 more books and was forced to 😅 (the one benefit to writing for a decade before going back to edit and release!)

#WritingCommunity #SnipShare #Sniptober

“We should probably press forward. There are a lot of small villages along the main roads we can stop to rest in along the way. We don’t have any nocturnal birds that are out to destroy anyone, so it should be relatively uneventful.” Uneventful was something Loke suspected all of them would be looking forward to. “I haven’t been to Lanta since I was a child, but there is a lot of open area and the beaches were actually lovely if I am remembering properly.” She had a lot of mixed emotions about returning to Lanta for the first time in nearly two decades. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to continue to repress her grief longer or if the visit would trigger something deeper. For now, Loke decided pushing forward was the only thing she could do, regardless of her own emotions.

#Sniptober day 10

This one's from Backlash (Winter's Wrath Book 1)

Only mention of 'lovely' is sarcastic lol But it is lovely how Danica and Alder can talk about anything, including the hi-jinks of Alder's band mates 😂

#WritingCommunity #SnipShare

“You want to head over to the warehouse early? Is that where we’re meeting again?”
Alder cocked his head, his brow lifted. “Yeah, we’re meeting there, but I figured you wouldn’t be in a hurry to be around our lovely Madame Croissant.”
Croissant? Danica snorted. “That’s Madame Courchesne. Not sure how you got ‘Croissant’ out of that.”
His lips tipped into a sheepish smile. “I may have stopped listening to her when she started being a bitch to you. I heard Tate call her that a few times, so I thought that was her name. Might be that he’s not a fan of our choreographer either.”
“Probably not. Did you hear her lecture him about how he should be sitting straighter behind the drums? If it wouldn’t have screwed with the sound, he’d probably have laid his head right on the snare.”
Alder laughed. “There’s still time. I wouldn’t put it past him to mess with her today.”
“After we almost got all the moves perfect yesterday? No way.” Danica hopped to her feet, popping one last blackberry in her mouth before heading to the bedroom to get dressed. “I bet he’ll be on his best behavior.”
Joining her in the bedroom, Alder tugged on a fresh shirt, then gave her a challenging smile. “What are you willing to wager?”
She touched her tongue to her bottom lip and smirked at him. “I think I might enjoy having you as a slave for the day.”
“I think you get whatever you want from me either way, so winning won’t mean much.” His words were sweet, but there was a cockiness to his tone that had her arching a brow at him

Let's go with this one from a scene I need to work on this week and fits the "clueless Katie" theme I've had this week.😂

Here she's at a grocery store and sometimes women are just really friendly to her. Offering to show their tattoos, try a recipe together... just so friendly and nice.

Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript with the word 'lovely' highlighted.

“Excuse me, I just need to get something from right there,” a woman says.
I look up from texting Kyle and see a lovely woman reaching up for a jar of cherry syrup on a shelf up near my head. She has remarkably vibrant pink hair with a cool shaved undercut, enough ear piercings that I am jealous, a nose ring I have certainly considered, as well as some gorgeous tattoos on both arms and working down her neck and chest.
I am especially amazed by the intricate line work of a vine tattoo weaving it’s way down the middle of her chest and flowing under the neckline of the red flannel she is wearing. It is unbuttoned enough to show an enticing amount of a complicated weaving of vines between her—
Whoops! Do not stare at women’s chests!
I look up and she is smiling at me.
“Heh heh, uh… hi there. I was admiring your tattoo.”
“I noticed.” She rolls the jar around between her hands rather than put it into her cart. Is she checking its consistency? “I… um… have quite a few more tattoos.”

“You’re quick, Peg. This is not, as the movies say, my first rodeo.” Jacqueline sipped her coffee and smiled over the rim of the cup. “Lovely. The coffee.”

The praise, the smile, the dark eyes, brought heat again to Peg’s cheeks.

For #Sniptober day 10!

There's a bit of a culture shock going on between Pyra from the female outlaw village and Ronan's friends. A clash between personalities too maybe...
The use of 'lovely' is possibly a bit sarcastic..

‘Ronan? Dude! hat are you doing here?’ Donnie asked.
‘Are you on a date with you outlaw girlfriend?’ Augie added, and with him three other boys joined his classmate.
He groaned. ‘not them, not now…’ He whispered to Pyra.
‘So that is your outlaw girl?’ Donnie asked.
Ronan cringed, so Pyra suddenly stood up straight in an attempt to avert a freeze reaction.
‘She’s not mine. I’m unmarriable. I can’t have a girlfriend. But she’s a friend.’ Ronan muttered.
She looked at him with fiery eyes. ‘You Nationers are full of clichés and stereotypes. So a boy and a girl together have to be a couple and can’t just be friends? Come on, we're fifteen and we only know each other a month or so too.’
‘A boy and a girl, isn’t that obvious then?’ Augie said.
‘Eh, no. Most couples are made of two woman in my village. And still those women have other friends too, other women, or men sometimes…’
‘Ah, but you outlaws are weirdos.’ Augie said.
Pyra shrugged. ‘I don’t understand why everyone is so obsessed with romance. Maybe one day, and I agree he’s definitely a much better partner candidate than all of you together, from the first impression you gave. But today I’m exploring your lovely City with him as a friend. It’s interesting here, just because it is so strange. It’s like I found a primitive tribe of barbarians that has reached the stage of technology and flats. Endless ugly flats everywhere…’ She looked Donnie in the eyes, and he looked away.
‘Pyra…’ Ronan said. She looked at him and saw him cringe again, so she grabbed his hand ended the conversation.
‘But I think this is going nowhere. I’m sorry for wasting your time, boys. I recommend you practice a bit with talking to girls, because you still have a lot to learn, but I’m afraid I won’t be available as a study object. I was having a walk with Ronan and he needs some quiet space now.’
Before Donnie could react they were gone.

The BL spice is spicing~🌶️

#TY4LM 🦈

Empty again, I fell back on the couch. Marin laid down next to me, his head on my chest and fingers interlaced with mine.
‘That was beautiful,’ he whispered, unmoving. ‘I don’t know why we didn’t think of it sooner.’
‘Well, I’m just glad I lasted closer to my usual the second time,’ I said with a chuckle. ‘I did exponentially better. How about you, my lovely little sharky?’
Marin let go of my hand to trace my areola with a thick, black, claw of a nail. ‘If you want to know how it was for me, you might want to look down.’
I did. On my and his hips and the couch was a mess that couldn’t have come from me alone. I let my head fall back with an exasperated sigh. ‘Man, that’s going to take forever to clean up.’

#Sniptober "lately"

from A Prayer for the Pirate Queen 🏴‍☠️ 💜 ⚓️ currently in third draft revisions

"Hello, daydreamer? Kettle's boiled." Iona, slouching in the chair on the far side of Kallista's desk, shook her head and tutted as Kallista snapped out of it and continued making the coffee. "Saints, and here I thought a day off with the lovely Doctor Philistos would help you get some focus back."

"I have rather been off my game lately, haven't I," Kallista stated more than asked. Iona didn't even know the half of it. Kallista had nearly spoiled her perfect day with Geni by all but propositioning her. Granted, it was in a veiled manner, so she could have denied the charge had Geni levied it at her. Take the queen—what had she been thinking?! She'd played the moments following over and over in her head, trying to guess at what Geni's next move would have been had they not been interrupted. Had Geni stood to meet her, or to flee from her, even slap her? Or was it completely innocent, and she was rising to shake hands or bow or whatever it was serious Tiles players did after a game?

#Sniptober day 9!

This is from Upper Class, right before Ward meets Miguel and they get testy with one another lol

Wonderful first impressions and all 😉

#WritingCommunity #SnipShare

“Hey buddy, did you get lost?” He noticed the collar on the dog’s neck and his brow shot up. Louis Vuitton? Damn. Who spent that kind of money on a dog collar for a puppy who’d grow out of it within months?
Probably someone who’d be missing him now.
And has their servants out looking.
His lips thinned as he shoved away the bitter thoughts. He didn’t have the best impression of rich people lately, but that didn’t matter. The puppy had a license with his name and address. No need to have anyone wondering around in the rain. Rich or not, his owner would be relieved to have him home safe.
“Doesn’t look like you got too far on your little adventure, Boots.” Ward smoothed the puppy’s damp black and white fur away from his eyes as Boots gave him a sleepy look. He needed to be dried up, but he was trembling less and looked about ready for a nap. “Not a lot of houses around here. Let’s see which one’s yours.”

Ah, I have that word...
#Sniptober day 9!
He's been acting weird lately, since he met the outlaw girl. And now his parents aren't happy.

(Neither are her parents, but they're less dramatic about it and trusting that they'll manage to get back somehow)

The bell rang, and Alex opened the door to find a woman he had never seen before in his life, or had he? Everything about her was strange and weird, but something looked familiar too, like a memory that wasn’t completely his. She looked official and important, but had wild curly hair, and wore a brown dress with animal patterns, on which a not a ranking badge but a sort of W-badge was clipped. An outlaw woman?
‘Hi, can I come in? I’m Elder Eliza of Seventh City Ghost Town and I have some, eh, news about your son Ronan. He won’t come home for a while I’m afraid, but for now he’s okay.’
‘Ghost Town Elder Eliza?’ Alex said, with big eyes. ‘And Ronan won’t come home?’
‘You are Alex Hunter, his father, I presume?’
‘Yes, I am Ronan’s father. And what did you do to my son, Outlaw woman?’
‘I did nothing. But he was exploring a stash of books in an aeroplane that took of, and now he’s in Héva.’
Ales almost dropped his glass. ‘He did what? And is where?’
‘It was that girl, wasn't it?’ Naomi said, coming in. ‘The redheaded one, with the wild eyes. The one he said he was being friends with. He’s been acting weird lately, ever since he met her.’
Elder Eliza nodded. ‘They certainly are friends, Pyra introduced him as such to me. He seemed a polite and intelligent boy, a bit shy maybe.’
‘And now she smuggled him to a country where men are forbidden and don’t exist?’
‘That was an accident, Mr. Hunter, not something even Pyra in her wildest mode would ever plan.’

The next time Lu ran into Sorrel was surprisingly in the city library, funded by the Queen for research and open to the public with special permission. Lu had been recently granted total access, after proving he wouldn't burn any books by simply touching them. Before then he'd had to request books by title or subject and hope the librarian's assistant at that time would find what he wanted. And he had to read them within sight of the front desk while also wearing elbow-length leather gloves which made it nearly impossible to turn the pages.
Now that he was old enough to show 'proper discipline' over his magic, he could actually roam freely. Like he was incapable of controlling his own flames.
Alright, he sometimes wasn't, but that had only happened with a book once.
    Maybe twice…
They were his own books at any rate.
And he doubted the royal library had any smutty half-copper paperbacks anyway.

A subtle tug had Gabriel turning in place, reflexively looking toward the Void. Lately it did not tug. Lately it shuddered and heaved and groaned. What had happened? Why now? As the questions formed in his mind, black feathers fluttered at the edge of his awareness. He turned again.

Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript with the word 'lately' highlighted.

Katie whispers into my ear, her breath hot and the fleeting touch of her lips tickling. “You have been working so hard lately. Doing so much for all of us. So tonight…” She punctuates each word with the softest—barely making contact—kiss behind my ear. “Is… all… for… you.” The final word is more an exhale into my ear than a word and I involuntarily shiver.

I was actually surprised that in all 78k words of #TY4LM, there are only two instances of "lately".

(The other one is massive spoilers~🦈)

I sat alone in the back, while Marin was up front with Nerissa to navigate. As soon as we crossed a bridge to one of the barrier islands, I received a glance in the rearview and knew the jig was up.
‘So what was it we’re picking up?’ Nerissa asked as we approached the parking lot Marin indicated. It was cheap, so of course we had a little walking to do.
‘It’s, um, something for…’
‘It’s okay Marin, she knows.’
Nerissa sucked her teeth and stared at me through the rearview. ‘No fun at all, you. None. At. All.’ After parking, she turned completely around in her seat, letting her arms hang down the back. ‘So, tell me oh keeper of secrets. What are we really here for?’
I glanced at Marin and shrugged. ‘Well, we were thinking we hadn’t been seeing as much of you lately, so I got us some tickets to see a couple bands.’
‘Emilie and FtM right?’
‘Yeah, how did you—?’
‘Good choice. I love FOB, but those Heroes are no heroes of mine.’
I just nodded. Sometimes how aware she was scared me just the tiniest bit.

Late to my own game 😂 but if you’ll excuse the lateness I’ll share a snippet with you that contains not only a reference to my favorite show, but also my favorite line inside TTL.

“You deserve stories that hold you gently… just like you hold the world.”

The last ten minutes were their ritual decompression. Eve leaned back slightly. “Alright. Tell me, what’s been bringing you joy lately?”

Lunaris perked up, words spilling with sudden brightness. “This cartoon I found, it’s like a pastel fever dream. There’s this alien puppy cat thing? It moves like a possessed plushie and speaks in glitchy robot gibberish. The good kind of gibberish. The wise kind.”

Eve laughed softly. “A chaotic oracle.”

“Exactly!” Lunaris grinned. “And there’s a girl who might be half machine? Or cursed by stars? But right now she’s just making donuts and fighting shadow creatures with two tongues. It feels like dream logic. Familiar.”

Eve’s smile softened into something knowing. “It speaks your language.”

Lunaris pressed a hand to their chest. “Yeah. Makes me feel less weird.”

“You deserve stories that hold you gently,” Eve replied. “Just like you hold the world.”
