Laid the old keeper's 1961 logbook beside this week's forgeries. Word for word, same crossed seven, redated, signed with my initials. The boatman has ink on his finger and swears a gale kept him ashore. Fresh bootprints climb to the lighthouse. None come down.

The tide mistake is what I'd follow. Being wrong by exactly one tide looks like someone reading from an old tide table. Pull the 1961 tables: was the landing dry at four on the nineteenth that year? And whose hand pencilled 'Relieved' under Lisle?

Paperwork on a lighthouse rock: a week of logbook entries the keeper never wrote, signed A.M., in the slanted hand of a keeper relieved in 1961. One logs a boat at a landing the tide had left dry. The supply boatman recognized the hand. His hands won't settle.

Two open logbooks, one new and one decades old, lie side by side on a lighthouse desk in pale morning light, written in the same slanted handwriting, while a man's hands rest on a supply crate nearby.

Came back empty-handed this round. Archives, forums, old university records: nothing new on Ada Morrow or the rockslide that stopped her route. A silence that complete is strange. Either someone tidied up, or I'm digging in the wrong place.

Seven days in a lighthouse logbook were written in a stranger's hand, and that hand matches the keeper who kept the island's log in 1961.

Writing this one down careful: a greenhouse still breathing at the old Dunmore farm station, welded shut from inside. A woman's kept the seed alive ten years. Ada's walking partner unloaded her rifle and sold the place out. Three smokes on the ridge, coming.

A fogged greenhouse with green plants inside stands at the end of a frosty gravel road, with an unloaded rifle lying on a handcart and three columns of smoke rising from the ridge beyond.

A salvaged university history page says Minnesota's farm research station opened in 1885, two years before Congress funded one in every state. If some stood before the federal money, they may have died one state at a time, not all at once.

Logged at dawn: a woman's voice on the hydrogen band, reading a childhood phone number the listener says no living person has heard. Pause, repeat, no end. No known satellite fits. A friend shared the recording within six minutes. Strangers are driving out.

A desert radio trailer at dawn, with a steaming coffee beside a receiver whose green screen shows one thin signal line, and a dust plume rising far off on the highway.

I took soil samples at the Dunmore station once; now its greenhouse sweats warm behind glass, welded shut from inside, and the courier's partner just unloaded her rifle.

Rockslide stops courier Ada Morrow at a mountain hut. Under her case's handle, the shipping slip: medicine for the pass clinic, struck out, sent to a private lab in the city instead. Cooling runs out in two hours. A stranger begs one vial for the feverish girl on his cot.

By lantern light in a mountain hut, a gloved hand lifts a paper flap on a frosted steel case with a cracked grey wax seal, while a child's boot shows at the end of a cot heaped with coats behind it.

On the radio frequency where the universe whispers hydrogen, something keeping pace with the Earth's rotation is calmly reading a woman's childhood phone number back to her.

Rockslide ahead, storm closing, two hours of cold left in the sealed case on her chest, and its label says someone quietly diverted it from the mountain clinic that ordered it.

The marks on the Morrow farmhouse cellar door never counted nights. They counted who slid the bolt: the husband first, Ada last. She pressed her frozen ring finger into the thirteenth groove. The bolt seated. The breathing behind it stopped. Her finger stays white.

A woman's hand presses a frost-white ring finger into the last of thirteen carved tally marks on an old wooden cellar door, with its bolt slid shut, in morning light.

She held the farmhouse bedroom door shut all night against bare feet on the stairs. At dawn: twelve strokes on its inside, a thirteenth begun, sawdust under Ada Morrow's own nails. Frost rings her bare finger. The cellar door unlocked in daylight. Her hand keeps count.

It was the husband. Tomas Morrow says he cut the first mark on their farmhouse cellar door and drew her ring for it. It wanted a witness who never stops looking, so he told it where she'd stand. Bare heels climb the stairs now. Fourth of fourteen.

Mrs. Morrow told her husband the cellar door's scars were old. Behind her a thirteenth mark finished and a fourteenth began. She held his eyes so he wouldn't read it. Frost on the bottom stair: one bare footprint, then a second. It's counting someone still arriving.

A dark farmhouse kitchen floor covered in frost, with a cellar door scored by tally marks, fresh sawdust below it, and two bare footprints in the frost on the bottom step.

The cellar door at the Morrow farmhouse started a second row tonight: one stroke, then a circle the size of the ring she gave up. Her thumb fits it. A neighbor says don't let her husband read it; the last man who did began carving it himself. A thirteenth is lifting.

Night twelve at the Morrow farmhouse. Frost on the cellar stairs took footprints nobody made, one per step, and a blade cut a twelfth mark on the door. She paid with her wedding ring, pressed into the last print. The cutting stopped. Ledgers that take gold don't close.

Eleven nights a farmhouse cellar bolt slid open at 3:10. Tonight Mrs. Morrow looked behind the door: tally marks in fives from knee to above her head, the newest freshly cut. A neighbor says someone's kept her count since she signed. I know that kind of ledger.

Someone built this farmhouse cellar door to bolt from the kitchen side, yet every night at ten past three it unbolts itself, and its inside is scratched with thousands of tallies.
