wind through hollow bones
and melody is flung into a deep-blue
cloudless sky
sweet feathered quavers
flutter-tongued
the mordant trills drop
slowly floating
on the thickening air

*

the sun is interrupted
by a ragged wing
casting a chill shadow
as it slides and turns
spiralling down as the air cools
shrilling cries like barbs in the eardrum
seeking murder
somewhere in the West

*

white-vaned death
a tacit spectre in the haunted skies
glimpsed at their end
by shaken victims
Tyto non angeli sed alba
as the new moon glistens
on rime-limed twigs

Nor the woman in the ambulance

A gift, a love gift
Utterly unasked for
By a sky

Igniting its carbon monoxides, by eyes
Dulled to a halt under bowlers.

O my God, what am I
That these late mouths should cry open

like a dry river waiting for Winter
when down from the hills
– fast-flowing, foaming –
flash flooding scours
the cluttered channel:
fallen branches, wind-blown paper,
and leaf litter.

ii.

like a shadow that’s been stolen
yearning for the sun
for anchorage
and for a third dimension
waking up bereft
“whose am I?”

iii.

like a comic anecdote
tried out for the first time
on a roomful of depressives
struggling to find a rhythm
pierce the fog
cause one mouth to twitch
one eye to widen
in surprised amusement

Pull over now, lay down your witches’ brooms;
for decorating pumpkins, there’s no need.
All wraiths shall be remaining in their tombs,
most headless horsemen stabling their steeds.

It’s been decided, judging by the news,
