Keren Gorodeisky looks at intelligibility, Kant, and what it takes to be responsive to beauty in this advance article. doi.org/10.1093/aest... #philsky

What the noetic philosopher misses by confining the affective to the merely sensory that she contrasts with the intellectual, reflective, and sense-making, and in confining the intellectual to the non-affective and non-embodied nous is, I worry, nothing less than the human. For human feelings themselves are not blind rather than cognitive, and not passive rather than active, as the noetic philosopher implies. Nor are they merely sensory and animalistic, rather than always already rational.

The Philosophical Analogy

The British philosopher Simon Blackburn famously used a comparison regarding physicalism (the philosophical thesis that everything is physical, including the mind): ®

"And saying that minds are all physical no more helps to explain how some physical things can think than saying that all flesh is grass helps to explain the difference between carnivores and vegetarians." ©

Blackburn uses this phrase to illustrate a flaw in reductive materialism. While it is scientifically true that all animal life ("flesh") relies fundamentally on plant matter ("grass") at the base of the food chain, stating this broad truth does absolutely nothing to clarify the specific operational differences between a tiger and a cow. Similarly, simply declaring that the mind is "physical" fails to explain how a brain actually generates thought.
