The great (big) Snettisham torc

Here's our (totally believable) recreation based on AI slop discovered by @tessmachling.bsky.social

A very big auroch with an even bigger gold torc round its neck is ridden through a field by a small 1920s gangster from Birmingham

Can totally relate to this post - here is my recent photo of a surviving stretch of the #IronAge ditch surrounding #Silchester - later a #Roman town. A totally unimpressive image, alas

The woody and earthy floor of what you can just about see is a gently curved profile of a wide ditch, with slender self-seeded trees growing here and there on the banks.

Did someone say #IronAge? 😍

Knockfarrel Vitrified Hillfort, Ross and Cromarty. #HillfortsWednesday #IronAge #Archaeology #Prehistory #Prehistoric #RossAndCromarty #Scotland #Photography

Photograph of an iron age hillfort, its overgrown ramparts rising toward the right of frame. In the distance, far below, cultivated fields are laid out, with a line of dark hills behind. The sky is largely cloudy.

Another View of Dun Dornaigil Broch, Sutherland. #Broch #IronAge #Prehistory #Strathmore #Sutherland #Photography

Photograph of a ruined iron age broch, shot from a low angle against a backdrop of partially clouded but otherwise blue sky. The circular tower is of drystone construction, still standing up to nearly seven metres tall. An entrance passage with triangular lintel faces the camera. In the foreground there is windswept grass, and in the backround there are distant mountains.

Excavations suggest it dates from between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago and probably functioned as a defensive structure which once surrounded a small group of round houses.

This might not look like much, but it's the remains of an Iron Age enclosure in Pollok Country Park in Glasgow (spaniel included for scale).

Dun Dornaigil Broch on the Strathmore River, Sutherland. #Broch #IronAge #Prehistory #Strathmore #Sutherland #Photography

Photograph of a ruined iron age broch against a backdrop of green hills and a river. In the foreground is a tussocky slope leading down to a rough track that runs from left to right. The broch itself is a circular drystone tower, still standing almost seven metres tall in the section facing the viewer. The lower sections of wall are topped with purple heather. An entrance with a triangular lintel is visible at ground level.
