In related news, how did I not know that a new open-access English translation of Kepler's Dioptrice (1611) -- his second major optics work, and the first detailed printed theory of how telescopes work -- just came out last year? books.radbouduniversitypress.nl/index.php/ru... #HistSTM #EarlyModern

New copy of Michael Maestlin's rare treatise on the 1580 comet acquired and digitized by the Linda Hall library: www.lindahall.org/about/news/s... #HistSTM #EarlyModern 🔭 ☄️

Title page of the digitized tract, showing the Latin title of the work at the top, with most of the page dominated by a woodcut map showing the path through the constellations of several recent comets as well as the stationary point of the nova of 1572.

First the Academy of Natural Sciences, and now the Sternberg Museum of #NaturalHistory.

In a better world, leaders would divert some of the money currently being spent on AI or data centers to maintain our libraries, museums, and archives...

OTD in 1838, Charles Darwin read Malthus’s Principles of Population “for amusement.”

The idea of a “war of nature” was venerable, but D realized that such a war would tend to remove deleterious variations from populations. Natural selection would necessarily follow.

This #NotesandRecords special issue demonstrates the complexity of plant studies, as early modern scholars conceived plants not only as a subject of botanical studies, but also as a laboratory object that mediates the study of nature: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsnr/issue/7... #HistSci #HistSTM

Thomas Hunt Morgan was born OTD in 1866.

If you're ever feeling that your work is uending and unedifying, remember that he once said this: "Two years work wasted, I have been breeding those flies for all that time and I've got nothing out of it."
