Teaching Y12 how to write essay intros today, and two of my students wrote conclusions instead. I just had an instinctive ‘this is a conclusion’ reaction, which I’ve never done before. Am I becoming a better teacher, or am I so exhausted I’m operating at a new level? #insomnia #historyteacher

And when this little unit is done, we move to London for 1750-1900. When that’s done, Manchester for 1900-present (I think)

We did Oxford for medieval, because it was England’s murder capital. #historyteacher

Norwich also did a Great Census of the Poor in the 1570s to deal with vagrancy. So many examples for kids to use. It’s so interesting and hopefully is making the topic less abstract. Some people we’ve followed from accusation➡️trial➡️punishment #historyteacher

I found a really good blog about the ducking stool which was on the bridge over the river Wensum. It’s really clear about how the city authorities treated women. We’re going big on the ‘different experiences for different people’ angle this year - women vs men. #historyteacher

Punishment (still to write lesson, but…)
Bridewell
Execution spot at Lollards Pit for burnings
Hangings of witches at castle
Transportation case to American colonies
Bloody code cases too. It has everything on the spec and I have named women in lessons (see??? It can be done!!!) #historyteacher

Law enforcement: a watchman was tipped over in his box by a group of drunk boys.
Hue and cry raised to put down a riot.
Sanctuary claimed at Cathedral in 1511
Church courts being ignored by the 1670s
Scolding case heard at Guildhall, not consistory courts, 1587 #historyteacher

Crime: heresy. 3 Marian martyrs - 2 were women. Cicely Orme and Elizabeth Cooper.
Witchcraft: Henry Maggs ‘caught’ by Witchfinder General.
Moral crime: found a case of scolding and one of fornication.
Smuggling: gang transported goods to Norwich from Norfolk coast
Highway robbery ✅ #historyteacher

If you’re teaching Crime and Punishment for GCSE I can highly recommend using Norwich as an early modern case study - the city had everything and the museum is in the old Bridewell *and* they’ve done a virtual tour ✅✅✅ #historyteacher #GCSE
