Happy Birthday F Scott Fitzgerald! Great author of 4 novels (and one unfinished) and 164 short stories. Volunteered immediately upon US entry. He wrote his first draft for “This Side of Paradise” during training as an Infantry Officer. The war ended before he shipped to France.

The 'Am I Offensive?' cartoon is almost as famous as the Wipers Times itself. It appeared in the May 1916 edition, signed by Sapper Ernest J. Couzens.
Over 110 years later, my latest article finally puts a face to the name. #wiperstimes #ww1 #fww

I've built quite a collection of #FWW #TrenchJournals, but this is the first time I have managed to get my hands on something from the #BoerWar. The similarities between the two wars in terms of soldier journalism are remarkably strong.

I was in York yesterday for a funeral. On my way back I spent a few minutes at the York Central War Memorial. These are just the names of the North Eastern Railwaymen who died in the Great War. Shattering stuff. A signal of catastrophe, of service, and profound sacrifice. #FWW #Memorials

Beginning another tour on behalf of @sophie1wwtours.bsky.social, following in the footsteps of a 2nd Bedfordshire man, who only survived 40 days on the Western Front in 1918.

On our way down, today, we stopped off at one of my very favourite sites: Vimy Ridge.

Here is an outstanding essay that a soldier wrote to "The Nation." It was published in the 21/10/1916 issue on pp. 104-106. This was a frank and realistic oped from the trenches to the living rooms of British homes. #WW1 #FWW #WesternFront #BritishArmy #Tommy #History

Happy Birthday Agatha Christie! Queen of Mysteries! Sold more than 100 million copies in over 100 languages. Already published when WW1 broke out, she immediately volunteered as a Nurse and later served as an Apothecary Assistant. She served until September 1918.

Today in 1916, the Italians, commanded by recent birthday boy Luigi Cadorna, try for the 7th time to beak the Austria-Hungary line along the Isonzo River. After capturing Gorizia during the 6th Battle, they attacked on a narrow front. They took San Grado di Merna but little else.

Happy Birthday Maurice Chevalier! Already known in 1914, WW1 started while he fulfilled his national service. Wounded and captured during a German attack, he learned English in POW Camp. Acquitted of collaboration in WW2. Persecuted by the McCarthy Committee in the US.

Happy Birthday General Erich von Falkenhayn! Commanded the German Army after von Moltke was found unstable. Kept the Allies at bay in 1914 and 1915. In 1916 he will roll the dice and attack Verdun. This bloodbath will cost him his job. He then went to Romania and Middle East.

"The tide of #war ebbs and flows apparently, but #baseball goes on #forever." (New Orleans States, September 28, 1918.) — #ww1 #fww #sport

Newspaper clipping:
BALL SUPPLIES SAVED FIRST BY YANKS
Next to Equipment, Americans, French. Take Diamond Outfit
PARIS, Sept. 28—Next to rifle, ammunition, and canteen. American soldiers seem to rank baseball supplies among the list of the necessities of life in the front lines. At least such was the decision of a Yankee unit operating with the French forces lately. It happened that this unit got into a very hot corner and the order came to retreat.
The necessity for haste made it impossible for the men to carry much with them in the way of personal belongings, but when they arrived at a station out of immediate danger it was found that the baseball paraphernalia had been saved, while many kinds of personal belongings had been sacrificed.
The balls and gloves had beer furnished hy the Y. M. C. A. and the men took it upon themselves to carry them in preference to their own little luxuries.
As soon as the unit had reached a quiet place the supplies were turned over to the Y. M. C. A. secretary, who was immediately called on to re issue them for a game. The tide of war ebbs and flows apparently, but baseball goes on forever. — New Orleans States, September 28, 1918.

1919 portrait of gĂ©nĂ©ral Henri Gouraud by Joseph-FĂ©lix Bouchor on display in the MusĂ©e national de la LĂ©gion d’honneur et des ordres de chevalerie, Paris.
Gouraud‘s khaki uniform indicates his roots in the colonial infantry. He bears both the mĂ©daille militaire & the croix de guerre. #1GM #FWW #WW1

Portrait of gĂ©nĂ©ral Henri Gouraud by the artist Jean-FĂ©lix Bouchor. He wears a kĂ©pi with distinctions of his rank as well as the tenue en drap kaki of the colonial forces. The artist has chosen to portray Gouraud in a way that doesn’t show the latter’s missing arm - a result of a Turkish shell explosion during the 1915 Dardanelles campaign where Gouraud was briefly commander of the Corps expĂ©ditionnaire d’Orient.
The distinctive green and yellow ribbon and shape of the médaille militaire is visible, as are the several « palmes » on his croix de guerre.
Gouraud was a veteran of several colonial campaigns prior to the First World War and continued to serve France’s colonial interests after the war.
