The stain on his shirt was shaped like a rose with petals in different shades of red, each one crafted by a faltering beat of the dying man’s heart. His pursuer was a stocky man with greasy hair, a couple of inches taller than Joric and half again as broad. He carried a dented metal hip flask in his left hand and flexed the right one like he was preparing to use it. A younger man with blond hair trotted behind him, wringing a tweed flat cap in both hands. He was restless. Worried. Throwing looks over one shoulder, then the other. That was a bad sign. “Are you Joric?” the older one said, grinning, a false, mean grin with two holes in it. A man with missing teeth. Also a bad sign.

Cecil swept from the room, leaving them alone in the Lich’s study with two guards who were sweating like whipped horses and another one who was pale as unbaked meringue. “Why did we bring them?” Aneira said from the corner of her mouth. Rhodri responded with a spare shake of his head that said, “Quiet,” but before Aneira could feel the full breadth of the admonishment, heavy footsteps sounded in the doorway Cecil had just disappeared through. The newcomer was four steps into the room before he noticed he wasn’t alone. He stopped walking, red-rimmed eyes drifting from one face to the next, landing on no one in particular. “And where is Cecil?” he asked in a tired voice.
