Large fly with wings folded over its long body like a cloak, facing a wall with a black and yellow bumble bee belly up at its mercy, with the late evening sun casting dramatic shadows against the wall and providing a Tuscan color palette. There is a long diagonal crack in the wall that originally confused me - it’s not part of either bug’s anatomy.

Microchrysa flaviventris female. Looking closely at wing venation the discal cell is partially open in this species.

My 6th record of Callicera spinolae (Ivy Longhorn Hoverfly) on Ivy in my S. Cambridgeshire garden this autumn and the 3rd male. Unlike the previous 2 males, he wasn't camera-shy, and I got some better photos of this incredibly rare UK BAP Priority Species.
