There are grey circles of focus on particles in the water- this is not the best shot but this decorator crab is the star of our story. He is facing to the left and covered in algae so only tow legs visible look like a crab at all. The crab is on a surface which looks just like its body- covered in algae.

The crab from shot one has suddenly turned around to face the camera (and caught me completely off-guard). In a matter of seconds the crab has raised itself up on its hind legs and released lilac/ pale blue juveniles or eggs into the water in a very quick burst. The eggs had been held underneath the crab prior to this. A few eggs / juveniles are almost in focus- everything else is out of focus! Behind the crab the water is black because this is at night.

The eggs or juveniles have begun to disperse into the water and the crab has quickly scuttled away. Left in the black water are a few eggs / juveniles. Maybe this creature in focus to the middle right is a juvenile crab? The picture is a black background with lots of white/blue dots. One is brighter than the others and looks a little like the shape of a horseshoe crab.

A tiny striped shore crab, about 3 centimeters across, is jammed into a crack in the basaltic rocks on the ocean side of Proposal Rock on the beach at Neskowin State Park along the Oregon Coast. Its eyes are black, its claw tips are kind of lavender, but turn a mottled spring green and maroon as they go up to the rest of its body, which is also those colors. A couple of cream-colored barnacles are attached to the rock on either side, as well as some very tiny baby barnacles growing on the “roof” of this rock crevice.
