The alarm shatters the dark,
and they arrive side by side:
the bright, thin edge of what could be,
and the heavy drag of the long delay.
Hope throws back the curtains,
letting the pale morning hit the floor,
while disappointment lurks in the corners,
measuring the distance
between the dream and the dirt.
A day of days approaches.

Judas Kiss

The coffee pot sputters its grey grief
while floorboards groan beneath a heavy stride.
Swallow the bitter tablet, drink the tonic,
find the light switch in the stale hall.
We hold the framework steady while the ceiling sags,
keeping the furnace warm against the storm.

Rain

Quiet mother, deep-drifting,
loose-jointed sky,
we open the cracks in the pavement,
the dry cup of the palm.
Wash the grit from the tongue.
Teach us the heavy surrender,
to drop without weight,
to slip past the stone-ribbed spires
and find the dark, undivided earth
where everything begins to soften
and the thirst forgets its name.
