Don't get me wrong. I love Clint Eastwood. But he's a one-dimensional actor (terrific in that dimension). I actually think he's a better filmmaker than actor.

Best I can do is one of my favorites (to many for one). Mizoguchi is a true master of film. Zushiō escapes the estate and walks to safety. This film broke my heart.
