In Othos Unbound the technology level is about the same as the late 1400’s in the real world.

Magic has made a big leap in technology, but due to its volatile nature that technology is only reserved for a select few who can afford buying it or risk creating it.

The main story for Raising Little Missy takes place in the 1980 and 90s: cars and landlines, maybe a pager. Video rental stores and casual smoking in restaurants.

The time travel is "ancient, barely-understood magic" that doesn't represent how most of the world works.

Though Otherworld is the realm of the Fae, mortal refugees from our world bring some of their technology with them; from Roman Aqueducts, to Edwardian electricity.

It's half magic, half old school technology

The main WIP is set in modern day, so the usual culprits (smartphones, cars, etc.). I'm not relying on tech as much even though it's there, it's just part of the scenery. #FirstDraftFall

My three WIPs are all pretty different!

Mercy has an isolated, old-fashioned feel. Providence isn’t quite historical, but the town’s technology is limited enough that daily life feels deliberately cut off from the wider world. Most of what matters revolves around homes, the...

Smoke on the Horizon is set in the modern world, post 2000, though we haven't narrowed down the exact decade. They've got roughly all the technology that we have in 2026.

#FirstDraftFall Beehemia is a steampunk(-ish) novel, so it's all the existing tech we had in the mid-1800s, plus a lot of steam-powered shenanigans, like airships. They *also* have magitech, or tech powered by magic, including healing devices, transceivers, heat generators, etc.

@jaxdevora.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 3:38 PM

#FirstDraftFall The latter. Beehemia takes place in a world called Lumina—specifically, in Eldaven, the capital city of the queendom of Eldana. Lumina, but especially Eldana, is a place full of magic and fantasy creatures/races, but it's *also* a steampunk as envisioned by an impressionist. (1/2)

Standard fantasy type tech level with a bit of early Firearms development in one specific part of it.

I've upped the tech level a tiny bit for my alternate universe. I wanted a touch more fun stuff for my heroes and villains, though I have strictly dumbed down and limited the use of AI.

(This is a better world, after all 😁)

The current era, the Aeon of Light, has seen a big technological boom - including space travel! There's also mass transit (blinkwyrms!), charmcasts (allowing people to watch shows or sporting events over distances), and charmpaper (allowing for instant messages over long distances). #FirstDraftFall

What kind of technology does your WIP have?

Ys and Agartha are at a level similar to 1890s England.

Hyperborea and Thule are at a medieval level, but leapfrogging forward due to contact with other kibgdoms.

@ambooneauthor.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 1:33 PM

The book's historical (1920s) so it's solidly at that tech level.

I should do more research on 1920s technology... (This gives me an excuse to buy more books, I guess. 😂)

Something akin to steampunk/early indistrial age as there are airships and guns but there aren't any fridges : (

@otakureview.bsky.socialOct 15, 2026, 1:10 PM

Historical. I tried to model it as something similar to the middle ages in Europe.

as is common for my stories despite their being fantasies, MarthaWIP is set in the real world (except there's ghosts and eldritch creatures and a small amount of magic for some people)
