She announced her intention to seek the presidency in 1870, and in 1872, the Equal Rights Party nominated her as its presidential candidate.
Her platform combined women’s equality with labor reform, political reform, and other causes.
She maintained that American women already possessed voting rights under the Constitution as citizens.
she presented this argument before the House Judiciary Committee, becoming the first woman to address a congressional committee on the subject of women’s suffrage.
She had relatively little formal education, but by the early 1870s she had become a public lecturer, newspaper publisher, advocate for women’s rights, and, alongside her sister Tennessee Claflin, one of the first women to operate a brokerage firm on Wall Street.

Women's publications encouraged elaborate needlework.
A beautifully executed piece demonstrated patience, refinement, artistic taste, and feminine skill.
Yet once women enthusiastically embraced crazy quilting, commentators began making fun of them.
Flowers, vines, insects, birds, fans, initials, dates, animals, sentimental symbols, and tiny pictures could fill the individual patches.
Some surviving quilts are so densely ornamented that almost every available space contains something to examine.
One major influence on the craze was Americans’ growing fascination with Japanese decorative arts.
Japanese art frequently employed asymmetry and unconventional arrangements that contrasted with many established Western decorative traditions.
Unlike traditional patchwork quilts, which relied on orderly arrangements, crazy quilts were designed to look irregular.
Makers pieced together scraps of fabric in different shapes and sizes, placing them at unexpected angles, creating a shattered-glass appearance.
Did you know?
In the Victorian era, Americans became so obsessed with deliberately irregular, extravagantly decorated quilts that contemporary writers complained that “crazy quilts have engulfed us.”
The Crazy Quilt craze swept across the United States during the late 1800s.
