From Book 3:

Seth sighed. "Enough with the questions. You'll have your answers soon. You're lucky Grandfather Miller is willing to allow you to leave at all.”

"How magnanimous of him.”

Seth spared her a glance, but instead of the glare she had expected, sorrow twisted his features.

The inciting incident of "Muertos"

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity

The smell was first. Hint of cherry. Almonds. Clove. Fuck. Mick walked in and his shoulders clacked against his ribs. Petunia was… Petunias. Violet Petunias. Nothing grows here. Except in marrow. Facing a four-year journey of hardship before rest. Maybe it’s better this way. That’s what I tell myself, at least.
“Purse on the table, Mick.”
“Can you ever stop being an asshole, Will?”
“Money don’t grow on trees, Mick. Waste not.” Mick put a hand over his skull and sighed. I hate that you’re right. He wandered over to the table and rifled through the purse. There wasn’t much. Petunia didn’t have much grave goods. Suicides rarely did. You even start off fucked here. Mick was briefly consumed by the unfairness of it all, until he found something he had not expected. A letter. Addressed to him.

Mick,

I may be dead, but I’m still a reporter. I know how to dig. I found out who you really are. I can’t believe I was so stupid. You killed me.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I’ve headed out of town already. Don’t bother looking.

Day 6 - We've talked about this in the context of other questions, but tell me, #Sustember--

Does writing suspense come naturally to you, or does it take you a few drafts to craft?

What challenges do you face? What's easy about it? What's hard?

Mick: Fuck. Why the hell would these sphincterless assholes be tailing us?

Will (a Will-O-Wisp that lives behind Mick's eyepatch): I mean, it could have something to with the Petunia being made into Petunias.

Mick: That wasn't me! You know it wasn't!

From my crime WIP.
Detective Nate goes to the morgue and shares a meal with the new in town pathologist, who then has a simple question for him.

He ate though, that sandwich divine, and Eric just smiled. Only their munching in that silence laced with Tina’s voice.
Eric spoke then, wiping his mouth. “Coffee, because we deserve it.” He rose and started making it, then turned to Nate. “Do you want to fuck?”
The question froze in the air, Nate’s eyes wide as his brain tried to make any sense of those five words. He swallowed. “What…?”
“Do you want to fuck?” Looking him square in the eyes, he leant his tall frame against the counter, crossing his arms. Waiting, as the Bialetti started singing.
Nate’s back drenched. “I… ugh… No… What the hell!”
Eric spread his hands. “Okay… no offense. It’s an honest proposal. You might need a good fuck after all those years, and I like you.”
Nate wiped his mouth with his hand and rose, white with anger. “You don’t get to tell me what I need. Fuck off.”

Got 'question' in the debut novel, Pandora's Secret, but they give away too much!

So going with something from the pilot episode of the dystopian TV drama series Tyler's War.

One of the bigger mysteries is Nanashi, so here's his introduction~

#Sustember I guess you can have this bit of flawless reasoning.

“You know, some people say you couldn’t cross bodies of water.”
Isidore walked on, unbothered:
“Yeah well, they also say some vampires could change into pumpkins, so those sure can’t.”
Lake couldn’t help but snort:
“Oh come on. That one had to be a legend!”
“Think about it, it’s great camouflage. Not everyone is going to trust the weird person with big teeth, but no one will say no to a free squash. How many murder mysteries have a pumpkin who did it? Not one, that’s how good they are.”

This #Sustember mystery snip underlines the 2nd question of the book - why did Paige's roommate not tell her vampires were real *before* she got to the vampire party?

(Leo is pretty pissed about it.)

#WritingPrompts #WritingQs 💙📚

A dark image with white text that reads:

"You don't actually know, do you?" Leo leaned forward, peering at her face as she looked at him sideways. "You have no idea."
     "Idea of what?"
Leo ignored the question. "Paige, who sent you here?"
"My roommate Liese. She was here last year."
     "And she didn't tell you?"
     "Tell me what?"
Leo rose abruptly, as though she'd offended him. She shrank into the chaise as he started to pace. "How did I miss this?" He muttered to himself.
     "Leo, what did I do?"
Leo froze, his body unnaturally still for a few heartbeats before he spoke. "Paige, you did nothing wrong. But I have to ask. Do you know what I mean by post-mortal?"
"You're roleplaying an immortal being. I thought it was a vampire, but I'll do post-mortal if that's what works for you."
He squeezed his eyes shut, clenching his fists as though he'd hit something. "I apologize for my reaction. Someone was very irresponsible with your well-being, and I really want to confront them right now."

Here, Ferris struggles with the reality of what has been happening throughout the book.

The reader knows what is going on and gets to watch Ferris flounder.
#Sustember

It had been years since Ferris felt the pain of a headache. It absorbed his senses. His mind wasn’t what it had once been. No matter how many times he attempted to refocus, he found it wandering without direction. The more they dug into the mess brought on by Rollan and the Circle, the more sludge they pulled out. While the questions increased, it was where they led that scared him the most.
All of them, every vampire, had grown lazy. Complacent. Over time, they lost a part of themselves. A side effect of an easy life.
Their plan to pull Rollan out of hiding was crumbling before them, and they had no idea why. By this point, the news of the Fire Run should have spread. Based on human surveillance and intel, the UnderDistrict was quiet as usual. No one was acting afraid or even hurried. It was unnatural.

#Sustember Day 5 - Share a snippet

From WIP 3 - The First Lesbian Book Club. The "book club" realizes they need a new member and Liv has a suggestion.

#WritingPrompts #WritingQs

“I have just the woman,” Liv announced proudly. “She likes mysteries. And we need someone who writes mysteries because of påskekrim.”
Lucy nodded solemnly. “All right. Krim I understand, but what is paw-ska?”
“It is when the bunnies make babies and we go to church and eat the chocolate bunnies.”
“Easter?” Clara ventured. “You read crime novels at Easter?”
“Ja.” Liv nodded. “Krim is very popular rundt påske.” Her accent thickened slightly as her confidence faltered.
“I think that’s fascinating,” Lucy said warmly. “And a mystery writer would fill a gap in our collective style.”
Liv brightened instantly.

#Sustember prompt: mystery

#Sustember Sept 6

I'm sharing a snippet from my work in progress SECRETS AND LIES, my mystery set on the island of Caleb's Woe, located off the northeast coast of Massachusetts. Read the alt.txt with the lighthouse picture below.

From SECRETS AND LIES, a mystery.

When he first saw the blood on the floor next to the breakfront, he wasn't sure what it was. It took a few seconds for the scene to sink in. He took a few steps closer to the tableau to get a full view. The smell hit him square in the face. It was so strong that he could taste it: thick and metallic. His stomach convulsed. He swallowed hard to keep from vomiting.

His father lay face up with his arms and legs splayed at cock-eyed angles, like a marionette that landed in a broken pile when tossed in its box after the show was over.

A gaping hull was all that remained of his fathers' face. Robbie averted his gaze so that he wouldn't have to look at where those accusing eyes had been. He squeezed his own eyes shut so tightly that he saw his blood flowing in dark waves that mimicked the spray of splattered gore on the wall behind his fathers' head. When he composed himself, he opened his eyes. Bugs Bunny heckled him from the television, one finger pointing at him as if all of this was his fault.

I literally last night promised my editor I wouldn’t touch Permafrost Heart so here is a snippie from WitchKin Hollow! My isekai WIP!

#Sustember

“Are you the witchkin by chance?” The smith inquired.
Khi hesitated before nodding slightly.
“I'm Khi.” They answered simply.
“Well met Khi, I’m Sovan,” the smith beamed, “That is some news! Your aunt was a wonderful lady. Her tinctures have been much missed these last few seasons. Might you be picking up her craft?”
“Her craft” Khi paused before allowing the question mark on their voice to lilt upwards at the end of the sentence, hoping to sound more sure of themself.
“Everything Mildred made was spun from gold, she could work wonders with a poultice or a potion, one of the greatest healers north of the sea and definitely the best this town has ever had.”
“I've just arrived but I will see if I can work something up.”
The smith grinned again and clasped Khi by the arm, shaking them in place.
“Glad to hear it, see you soon Witchkin.”
Khi turned to walk away again as Sovan gathered up his tools and the ring and headed off toward his cottage.
