Right now my plate is thankfully very full of TTRPG editing, which is one of my favorite kinds of projects. But as you say, it's always good to be aware of other editing services that I could offer if I needed to. #StetChat

A6: This has happened to me. I asked if the image was a placeholder until the designer delivered the final cover and illustrations. It wasn't. I mentioned that the logical errors in the images and text wouldn't encourage readers to go beyond the cover. #StetChat
A7: Thank them and politely say that I don't provide the service they are interested in.
So far that has ended the interaction.
LOL I have done the "I don't want to work on this, so I'll bump up the quote." Every time the client has said yes to a project that I added a PITA fee to, I've uhhhhh not had fun.
With generative AI on the scene, so many people think we're just glorified spell checkers who drink tea. #StetChat
#StetChat | Fair enough! Do keep in mind that coaching services can look like whatever works best for you. All of our services our different, even when we call them by similar names. But you don't have to include any aspects that are uncomfortable for you. ♥
Q7: A potential client who found your website contact form but apparently hadn't read your website…because they wanted a type of editing you don't offer. What do you do?
#StetChat Ooh, ouch, oof, that's so true. It is almost never worth the money.
A4: It sounds like AU would need to shift from an output-focused DE feedback program to a more freeform accountability/brainstorming coaching framework. This way, I'm not spending a lot of time developing feedback that won't be considered, but they'll still get structure+encouragement!

#StetChat | Oh, wow! Well, thank you!
A6b: One of the clauses I include in my contracts now is the right to not have my name listed on a project. If a client was going to have an AI cover that looks tacky as all get-out, I might want to evoke this clause and not be credited. #StetChat 2/2
A6a: I would do my best to politely explain why I thought using an AI cover was going to hurt their book/game. Readers, especially savvy readers, don’t like AI covers, especially ones that are blatantly AI. But my client may want to use it and not be swayed by my arguments. #StetChat 1/2
Benefits of professional cover design #StetChat
Back in the late 2010s, it was a decent place to get projects. I fear that it is now a place where clients want stuff done as quickly and cheaply as possible, but I can't be sure on that. #StetChat
A5: Is it leaving money on the table? Sure.
Buuuuuut if the manuscript is not ready for a copyedit or proofread, it won't actually BE only a copyedit/proofread anyway—because the larger issues will make it impossible for the scope to only be copyedits/proofreads.

I work with indie authors who can't afford multiple revisions with editors 🫂💜
So I can only do the best that I can. I recommend the author to do their own self-edits and revisions before publication, or have other indie authors help them.
