He stopped just short of them. Grimy sweat covered their faces. “You’re men!” he shouted. “You’re men!”

Not really, I guess. As iconoclastic as I might come across I'm actually fairly conventional, though my cyberpunk book is a slow-paced intense first-person slice-of-life which, I have been informed, means no one will ever read it (to which I say "so?"). It's also not all neon and cyborgs.

None. There are some authors I like but I think people, ESPECIALLY AUTHORS, should read any and all authors of all genres, including authors and genres they specifically don't like. SFF itself is diverse enough that no set of authors could ever be "foundational."

A good, interesting story with solid writing. No more, no less.
As to what I love to write? Whatever I want. I don't stick to any one genre and don't want to. My WIPs are cyberpunk, low-fantasy, space opera, pulp & dieselpunk, and the only throughline is that I'm writing them.

Hi, I'm Richard and...hmm, fundamental to my work? I dunno. I just write what I want to write how I want to write it. A "fuck it we ball" attitude maybe?
#SFFChat I mean, I like to muck about with the genre :P I think it's fun to mess with chosen ones, prophesies, and magic artefacts.
I think it depends more for sci-fi. I'm trying to examine what I'm writing about when I write it, so I'm less focused on genre convention and more on message.
#SFFChat Asimov's Foundation trilogy is pretty good. Idk much about his other writing. Mary Shelley should be considered a foundational SFF author for Frankenstein :P
I think Ursula K LeGuin did a lot to break SFF out of its foundational ethos and into more experimental areas.
#SFFChat Basic building blocks is interesting, as both genres are so expansive!
In my view, both hold up a mirror to reality - we explore and examine our own world through skewed and warped interpretations on the page. Both work well in different areas, and work for different people.
#SFFChat Q1:
Introduce yourself & share an element of your work you consider fundamental, or foundational.
Stories are ultimately about people and their relationships. Most of mine involve solving mysteries even if it's "how do we get out of this." Not all people have to be human (or alive)
#SFFChat A4: Hmm... I tend to mix cozy fantasy elements with intense speculative themes in ways even I have trouble knowing where the subgenre lines are for a piece. I've been forefronting my ND traits in my writing process & still exploring this.
(Dinner's here, will be winding down soon)
#SFFChat Q2: What do you consider the basic building blocks of science fiction and/or fantasy?
SF is "deviates from consensus reality through something in a scientific paradigm. That's why strict science not required. Fantasy is deviates from consensus reality outside a scientific paradigm." thread
#SFFChat Hi! I'm Moth, I write working class SFF, and... Oh man, what even is foundational to my work? 😅
I think themes of grief, and faceless bureaucracy and fear as an antagonist. Those always end up being fundamental to my stories.
