#SeptemberWorldbuilders!

There are a lot of horror stories about the Dark Sea. Lots of them are, of course, about the supposed monsters waiting to sink expedition ships, but a good chunk of them are also about Abelha

Like the one where she commands a ghost ship, or a ghost fleet, or summons

There is the myth of the Leviathan: a continent-sized sea monster.

Settlements in the coastal regions around Ogygia, particularly the Nausicaan Archipelago, have a pretty close relationship with a variety of sea life! Some benevolent companions are the kampoi, fishlike reptiles about the size of a cow with four flippers.

There are many sea creatures that are found in our own oceans as well, but according to legend, there is a giant sea serpent called Arolmeln, who once held the race of humans captive 🐍 #septemberworldbuilders #amwriting

18: In Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social), the Valestrals will make offerings to Alaes both before doing any trips across the ocean (making additional offerings to Stratil for good winds to sail) and during times of a drought (where a deer will be...

There are many myths, mostly because there are many ocean-related spirits and reports of their activities get passed down through word of mouth or are told as stories. The south sea islands in particular have a lot due to a turbulent romance between the sea and a volcano.

There is a very specific one! Some trolls (Freylar, child of Garseldomp, to be exact), have received a warning that all sorts of bad stuff will happen if the ocean to the west "wanes". How does an ocean wane?

Hope you’ve been having a good time offline, Kira 😊🫶

Rituals/traditions carried out at sea. Burials
All aquatics, whether northern hemisphere or southern hemisphere bury their dead at sea to return to the Abyss (their conception of the underworld)

Hello, #SeptemberWorldbuilders! Thanks for being patient with me while I have been enjoying some time offline.

Tell me about rituals, legends, prophecies, or anything of the like related to your world's oceans! Do you have anything about that in your world?

#SeptemberWorldbuilders The vishál, or giant rakefish, is like a 50', filter-feeding guitarfish. Instead of eating it, the Inamese sail alongside it and catch the fish that swim out of its way. There's also a parasite they pluck off its skin—it's a delicacy and has a lustrous, valuable shell.

I'm afraid I went boring in this regard again: ocean life is basically the same as hours. The one difference is that there are sea monsters, which often prey on the regular animals, BUT they prefer preying on humans, so the ecosystem hasn't collapsed.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders Celesta was undergoing vivaforming (i.e., terraforming) and already had well-established rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans—complete with all sorts of terrestrial aquatic life. Then the vivaforming process went awry and covered the entire planet with ocean...

One of the most beautiful creatures in Nixtral's seas is the sunbell, a multicolored fish native to the waters around the Principality of Wextal.

The sunbell is the sacred symbol of the Vesikoi tribe. At some point I definitely want to get art of it.

Oceanic Creatures of my own Creation:

Borloca-- a slippery white eel with a purplish catfish face

Auric Fish-- a golden salmon with white eyes

There are a few that I created, but the world mostly has things we would recognise from Earth — or would recognise from the planet if we'd been here 30 or 70 million years ago, actually.

Mairth has ancient lifeforms, 🧵

I've got a few noteworthy aquatic animals in Theryl. Some are my own creation, while others are adapted from folklore and mythology.

The most notable are rainbeasts: creatures made of pure water, who begin life in the ocean only to ascend into the clouds upon maturing.

Thessan's ocean creatures are our ocean creatures. No unique creations there.
