A distinctive part of “Psychotic Reaction” was its middle ‘rave-up.’ After ‘And it feels like this!,’ the song suddenly kicks into a frantic instrumental passage, building speed and intensity... Very reminiscent of The Yardbirds’ explosive treatment of “I’m a Man.” #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Count Five released their signature anthem, “Psychotic Reaction,” in 1966 on the Hollywood indie label Double Shot Records. Fuzz-guitar hook, wheezing harmonica, stop-start dynamics... and that famous middle ‘rave-up’ that was a tip of the hat to the British Invasion. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Groove Theory never returned to the US #Top40. “Keep Tryin’” reached #64 and “Baby Luv” topped out at #65, although both definitely performed better with R&B audiences. Amel Larrieux left, and Bryce Wilson’s planned second album with singer Makeda Davis was shelved. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Trey Lorenz supplied the male background vocals/ad-libs during the second half of “Tell Me.” Because Bryce Wilson appeared in the video, many listeners assumed Wilson was singing those parts. Lorenz received background-vocal/vocal-arrangement credits on Groove Theory’s debut album. #OneHitWondered

Yes, “Tell Me” by Groove Theory interpolates “All Night Long” by the Mary Jane Girls… which, itself, is a nod to Keni Burke’s “Risin’ to the Top” (interpolating the iconic R&B/funk baseline and groove melody). #KeniBurke #MaryJaneGirls #GrooveTheory #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Sampling uses the actual audio from an older track, and needs two licenses: master & composition. Interpolation re-creates the part without using the original audio, and only the composition is cleared. Often cheaper and much easier to clear. #OneHitWondered

“Tell Me” by the NYC R&B duo Groove Theory, co-written by Amel Larrieux & Bryce Wilson, interpolates Mary Jane Girls’ “All Night Long.” It resulted in Rick James getting co-writing credit on the single. #MaryJaneGirls #RickJames #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

“Tell Me” is technically a cover… Amel Larrieux & Bryce WIlson wrote it and Wilson produced it for British R&B group Rhythm N Bass, who released it in 1993 as “Tell Me (If You Want Me Too).” Two years later, Groove Theory revisited a song they had helped create. #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Groove Theory paired singer/songwriter Amel Larrieux’s soft, jazz-influenced vocals with Bryce Wilson’s stripped-down hip-hop production. One of the most underrated mid-’90s R&B duos, Groove Theory helped bridge the gap between classic 90s R&B and the emerging neo-soul sound. #OneHitWondered
