It's late but still Iowa wildflower Wednesday!

This week Katie Byerly features the "genuinely rare" Earleaf false foxglove, which likes wet meadows and grows in at least two locations in Cerro Gordo County.

you can’t tell but this northern bush honeysuckle was a quite large, mature burning bush covered in berries 5 minutes earlier. #nativeplants #gardening

A northern bush honeysuckle sapling freshly planted in a forest in the leaf litter, but seemingly undisturbed. Neighboring fern and jack-in-the-pulpit unmaimed.

A Paper Wasp on the boneset for #WaspWednesday. Polistes fuscatus. #WorldWaspWeek #bugsky #nativeplants 🌱

Four different views of a male Northern Paper Wasp (I think) feeding on white boneset flowers. Here we see the back of the wasp. The curved tips of the antennae identify him as a male. He has a black thorax with one white horizontal stripe and two vertical stripes below it. His abdomen has curved tan stripes alternating with black stripes. The black stripes have concentric circles of rust and tan on each side that get smaller and disappear near the end of the abdomen. The wings are a dark rusty brown. The wasp seen from one side. His head is black on the side and his legs are a reddish-gold color. The wasp has his face in a wispy white boneset flower, his antennae folded down in front of the flower, the tips curved like shepherd's crooks. The wasp grips a flower and drinks from it facing the camera, showing his pale yellow face and khaki tan eyes. Tall Boneset, Eupatorium altissimum. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.

I was walking in the woods and saw this beautiful closed bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii
It is a native plant, but just haven’t seen one in here in Minnesota. They are pretty low to the ground, so suspect they were there, but just didn’t see them.

🌸 great blue lobelia 🌿
Lobelia siphilitica

#nativeplants #ecoregion71

the terminal raceme of a great blue lobelia with a couple dozen blooming flowers mostly facing generally leftward though there are a few on the right as well. the stout green stem off which all the flowers grow has a few lance-shaped green leaves growing alternate by the bottom of the photo; the leaves diminish in size going up. there's no clear line where the situation changes from flowers growing from leaf axils to flowers subtended by leaf bracts, one grades into the other. the flowers grow each on a short, thin flowerstem that ends at a green calyx with long, claw-like lobes grasping the base of the corolla. the bilabiate tubular corollas are light blue-violet; they have three large, hanging lobes on the bottom lip and two small ascending lobes on the upper lip. the flowers highest up the stem are merely buds. in the background, a creek runs over shale bedrock, trees of the surrounding forest reflecting off its mostly still surface. a close-up photo of three flowers in a tall raceme, one facing forward, one slightly to the right, and the third facing to the right (this last one is a bit blurry). there are bits of other flowers in the raceme visible, but these are the only three entirely in frame. each flower had a green calyx with long, thin lobes; these are mostly obscured by the rest of the flowers due to the angle of this shot. each flower has a bilabiate tubular corolla, colored light blue-violet. the bottom lip has three long, wide lobes hanging parallel; where the lateral lobes meet the central lobe there is a raised white patch. the upper lip has two thin lobes that curve back and inward a bit such that their pointed tips nearly meet. the slit in the corolla tube between the two upper lobes is not directly visible, but is evinced by the arching column which rises diagonally from within to above the corolla, arching downwards by its tip. this column is a green style tipped with a thick white stigma, surrounded for most its length by a tube of fused stamens with light blue-violet filaments and dark purple anthers. great blue lobelia growing in a moss-covered patch of thin soil atop shale bedrock on the side of a creek in a hilly forest. the tallest lobelia of the several in this photo stands around waist-high. low on the stem there are large, alternate green leaves sorta obovate to lance-shaped. the top half of the plant is a tall terminal raceme with a couple dozen blooming flowers, mostly on the facing side of the stem. the flowers are light blue-violet and have two lips; the lower lip has three large hanging lobes, while the upper lip has two small erect lobes.

What’s Blooming in SoCal?
Telegraph weed (Heterotheca grandiflora) You’ve probably seen this & ignored it because you didn’t look closely. It is in the daisy family so it blooms late in the season benefiting migrating pollinators when flowers are scarce. California #nativePlants #nature

Looking down on a bunch of small yellow daisy shaped flowers on stalks of muted green tall stems. The plant w a mixture of yellow blooms and seed heads with fluffy pompoms that will disperse in the wind. Unassuming from afar the telegraph weed earns its name by looking like mini phone or electric line poles.

Common sunflowers blooming. The leaves have browned and dried out slightly. There's tons of seed heads that are a beautiful leather brown. A skipper butterfly is found on the bottom left of the image. I think it's a huron skipper or a fiery skipper I dunno.

An Oak Tree a Day
Don’t be afraid to poke through an opening Sometimes the best is just beyond view waiting to be discovered. It’s not often that you find an oak with such a thick canopy that reaches all the way to the ground. You can rest but still reach for the sky California #nativePlants #nature

A coast live oak with a full green canopy so thick that reaches to the ground without showing trunk or branches. It is in an open space area surrounded by a layer of dried leaves and foliage. The sky is blue and partly cloudy.

🍂 Fall is the best time to plant in the PNW, and what you plant now decides who visits this winter.

Anna's hummingbirds nest here in January, if they find the right natives...

Ghost pipe seems to always get a second wind in early fall. #nativeplants 🌿

A cluster of pure white ghost pipes with bell-shaped blossoms dangle off the top of stems in the leaf litter of a forest. The plant lacks green pigment as it is completely parasitic and has no chlorophyll.
