Such a delusional trance of fake happiness — “just put on a happy face,” “smile, though you feel like crying, smile, what’s the use of sighing” — was needed to avoid the huge loss of self-esteem, and thus effectiveness (“use”) that would come with a knowledge of all that one was enduring ... and all unfairly ... if one compared oneself with Nature. Indeed, one did keenly feel an unfairness in one’s life. Though it would not do for it to be acknowledged; it was another “inconvenient”

Leave it to humans to be so cut off from the reality of a loving God as to wish to be dead instead. For they have managed, with their imagination running loose and totally without even one lifeline to anything loving or nice — either in their own life’s experiences or in the mythology of reality they have been forced to accept — to come up with the most unimaginably horrifying view of their lives, and its prospects. “Alternative Facts” So these sad bedeviled know deep inside how miserable they are. But they find a way to stave off the realization of that truth and of its horrific roots in their suffering in childhood, through denying their unhappiness. Fake smiles, “put on a happy face,” perfect grooming, spiffed up attire for church or persnickety duds for the office, to bely to oneself as well as others what they are really feeling, are habits after a while. Self-loathing and the tragedy of their lives is nipped in the bud with precise cuts and fastidious attention to the placement of every hair on their heads; perfumes and colognes cover any residual, however potentially liberating, discontent. They take up arms against their misery and engage in an endless battle trying desperately to believe ... and unfortunately for us, assert ... that the opposite is true: That is, that their experience is happy. They will call themselves “blessed,” instead.

Public opinion had changed drastically after the Watergate hearings, so the recently reelected Nixon was left without support. Yet eventually their “Big Lie” tactics, as exhibited in their promotion of a “conservative backlash,” won out so that people began to believe and then to create what they had been repeatedly told. Since the opposite or liberal view, as part of the strategy of creating a conservative backlash, had been censored in the media, people began to think that is what was going on. At that point even Hollywood unconsciously colluded with the Big Lie of a conservative backlash in putting out movies and television shows along those lines.1 We will discuss later on how the show Family Ties was an especially blatant example of their intention to misinform the populace about the actual direction of the country. Thus, the Yuppies were the creation of the WWII Generation in their attempt to reverse the course of society that their own daughters and sons, as “Sixties Youth,” had put it on. And the propaganda against the Sixties Generation and its values, repeated endlessly over the decades, led to a media narrative that conservative ideas were winning and that, indeed, progressivism and idealism were silly impulses of a narcissistic generation. Whereas the opposite was what was actually true, such a narrative remains to this day, propped up by moneyed interests because it is convenient for their ends if the populace believes that.

He noted a tendency for growth and healing to occur in a progressive way through these levels. The sensory band is the level of expanded sensory awareness and is usually initially encountered by participants. The biographical band is the realm of the personal unconscious wherein unintegrated and traumatic memories and material from childhood and one’s personal history are retrieved, often relived, and integrated. The perinatal level of experience usually follows after dealing with the biographical material and involves the remembering, re-experiencing, and integrating of material that is related to the time prior to and surrounding birth. The transpersonal band, the level of spiritual experience, is usually reached after dealing with the other three levels. Four Modes of Experiencing — the Basic Perinatal Matrices Grof has also delineated four matrices of experience, four general experiential constructs, which he called basic perinatal matrices (BPMs). In addition, they throw in these techniques, most often, without qualification or experience with these techniques, and oftentimes out of knowledge gained solely from books or second-handedly ... not to mention rarely, because of professional arrogance, having experienced or undergone these regressions themselves.Combine this inexperienced dredging up of perinatal material with the fact, as I will be continually reiterating throughout this book, that people in these times are closer to their perinatal unconscious, to their birth trauma. Imprints: The Lifelong Effects of the Birth Experience, published in 1983, among other things places birth as the determining factor in creating basic personality constructs, called sympathetic and parasympathetic, which roughly coincide with the more common terms introversion and extroversion. Janov’s work is more empirical and neurophysiologically rooted than most in the field, and this was especially true of this work. Nevertheless, while the book is recognized in the field, Janov and his work have not gotten anywhere near the respect and attention they deserve. His therapy involving having deep feeling experiences, primaling, of all kinds — his primal therapy, involving the re-experience of anger, sadness, grief, childhood, early life, birth, and painful events from all other times in life and involving the re- experience and release of all possible feelings — is reduced to and ridiculed as “primal scream therapy,” from the provocative title of his first book. Thus, both lay and professional folk have participated in a slander of his therapy, giving the inaccurate impression — purposely, for some, no doubt — that his therapy involves merely eliciting screams in his clients.

The situation is depicting the sufferings of life, of course. And the response by the hero, Joe, presages the later one in relation to the volcano. That is, one can do nothing about the situation and must submit ... and simply survive. The self-sacrifice and bravery that will be necessary for the larger challenge is exercised here, as well. Joe takes no water for himself, while he pours mere capfuls of what they have, stretching it out to make it last, into the lips of the unconscious Patricia. Joe is already showing his willingness to suffer himself and put his own body on the line in order to ease the suffering of another. That is what heroes do. The response from the Universe is significant and profound. In the dead of night, the moon rises on the horizon. It is the largest moon imaginable and fills the sky. A beaten and emaciated Joe, after a mighty struggle just to stand, faces the sight in awe with lowered arms in submission. Then he raises his arms in an embrace and acceptance. Finally his legs shaking, he collapses to his knees and crosses his arms before himself in humility. He says, “Dear God, whose name I do not know. Thank you for my life.” FUNNY GOD Page 56

Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foun- dation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups. So, because of secondary altriciality ... that extra time of depend- ency as infants ... which is caused by prematurity, which is necessitated by the size of our skulls and brains, which size is the result of the overwhelming birth trauma of humans with its conse- quent need to be repressed in order for humans to function, which was caused because we began standing up and so altered the arrangement of our pelvic bones, we developed both language as well as the need for human interaction, the sociability, which is the basis for culture as well as human empathy. Regarding empathy, humans have been fitted to survive in groups where there is extensive communication of needs and desires. While other mammals care about the pain of their offspring and seek to mollify them and are capable of grieving, we are the only species who developed the ability to empathize to such an extent that we are the only ones to have psychotherapists. Ed said he needed this job as spokesperson, as the economy hit him hard too. Well, he’s making up for being out of the limelight, it seems. For while humans apparently can’t see what‘s coming, Mister Ed shows off quite an animal’s instinctive knowledge. He sees clearly: far into the past and into the immediate future. And he’s fed up and won’t be shut up, taking especially the “filthy rich” to task. Apparently animals know a lot more about humans than we do about ourselves. While our comeuppance is not pretty (that horse has quite the mouth on him — you’d never have gotten that from the show! and a rather gruesome imagination), it is not all humans he condemns. Given a chance, I betcha he’d bring back unions.
