Just to repeat one of tonight's ongoing themes: John F. Seitz's cinematography is outstanding. IMO it isn't "showy" but it does convey Don's desperation.

Birnam reminds me of my Grampa who was drunk everyday of his life.
Drunk he was sweet, eloquent, funny as hell, all the while telling me, a little kid, that he didn’t need the booze, just needed to know he had it in his hip flask.

Sound up! Rózsa was the first film composer to use the theremin (the electronic instrument that became a sci-fi staple): here, to convey the unearthly hold alcohol has on Don. He’d previously used the theremin in Spellbound, but #TheLostWeekend beat it to the screen by one month. #TheNoirCollective
