Enclosure is, above all things, an artificial water world. The gargantuan walls served both to keep life sealed within their given Enclosures, and also to attenuate the extreme tides and rogue waves that can form on a world with no proper continents. 🧵 1/4

19: The oceans in Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social) are largely unexplored and wildly unpredictable to its inhabitants, though as an aside, one reason we decided that Andos (the planet that the continent of Karnassia is on) only has one moon is...

Most of the world is ocean and islands! The story takes place on the continent of Niyala, which is the only continent fully above sea level. There is SO much left to explore! #SeptemberWorldbuilders

Tides are complicated given that there are three moons. Combined they have about 50% more mass than the Moon; but due to orbital distances, they can have a combined 95% greater tidal pull.

So tides can be extreme and change rapidly depending on the moons' positions. 🧵

The Sun-Drop Sea has been explored several times through history (this is what happens when the first guys to map it vanish, magically). it is subject to the tides, to the seasonal changes that bring the migratory species back. It acts like a regular sea. No volcanoes 🪡

The oceans of Mairth are actually almost 100% explored, but not completely. The abyssal trenches are largely unexplored.

This is not because they're inaccessible to the people living undersea, but out of respect, for 🧵

It is very well mapped and usually navigable the ordinary way, at least the areas where ocean spirits don't have a no human policy. Tides work fairly similarly in principle, but there are 3 moons so it can get complicated.

#SeptemberWorldbuilders!

The Ocean is a dark and hellish place, even more chaotic than the Outer Reaches. Don't go there. Just. Don't.

Nobody really knows what's up with the Dark Sea that lies beyond the Library's waters, and there aren't even native people living there who can navigate it

#SeptemberWorldbuilders, what are some facts about your world's ocean? Has it been explored or are there unmapped parts still? Do tides work similarly to how they work in the real world? Do you have any undersea volcanoes or cool geologic features worth noting?

There is one prophecy that one day all the land will sink into the ocean, because one area of it is quarantined due to a massive whirpool. No one knows where the fuck that water's going.

Rituals: People sacrifice shit to the ocean all the time

In the Nequinum oceans, there's the legend of the monstrous whale Barathron; said to have been a bloody cruel pirate cursed by the gods to change into a perpetually hungry whale confined in a watery territory 🧵1/2

But The Islanders on the planet Celesta have legends. They tell of the time, four millennia ago when the people were brought to The Island and how they found it barren and hard and lifeless...

Just before the stormiest season and again once that season is over there is a ritual to Hymegos to ask for his protection, guidance and aid for the fishermen and then thank him. At times when it seems fish are less plentiful, they might also have one of these rituals.
