116 pages into the first draft of my sci-fi (Yeah, I know it's a lot XD) and about to start the big climactic battle in the third act. Will try to get to it tomorrow night or Sunday night, Monday at the latest!

This week's been sunny in Hartford!

This is me and Gambit, the day before yesterday, out to play some fetch before I get working on the next script.

“Better late than never,” they say, but let’s be honest: “they” tend to be morons, where “we” tend to be the smart kids. The cool kids. Oooo, and good looking, too. I’m not sure what my point was going to be, but post something for #FirstPageFriday while I sort that out. 👍

Read the first ten pages of The Last Starfighter this morning. What stood out was how effortlessly Jonathan Beutel makes the trailer park where Alex lives a community. Efficient, effective, invisible writing. Also, this opening:

Signing up for a career as a screenwriter? Brace yourself, because for every little victory, there will likely be 100 crushing defeats. Why do we subject ourselves to this? Because we must.

I have completed the final script of my “Shadows” trilogy. A new feature called “Shadows of the First Dream”. Here is the #firstpagefriday for you all. #scriptsky

FADE IN:
EXT. ASHFIELD BORDER VALLEY - MORNING
Morning mist clings to the low wild grass. Along the ridge, faded heraldic banners from Dartmouth, Gagnon, and the Council flap against spiked timber poles driven deep into damp earth.
Mounted Dartmouth pickets patrol the perimeter, their leather brigandines wet with fog.
At the center of the field sits a broad open pavilion made of treated canvas and bleached timber.
EXT. ASHFIELD BORDER VALLEY - REFUGEE ENCAMPMENT - MORNING
Heavy gray mist crawls across a ditch choked with broken handcarts.
Dozens of DARTMOUTH REFUGEES huddle under greasy canvas tarps. Children cough into damp wool scarves.
A FARMER empties a water skin over a wooden tub. The stream twists mid-fall, defies gravity, and beads upward into the fog.
Beside him, an OLD WOMAN sifts a spade of dirt through her fingers. The soil crumbles into dry, weightless lead sand, drifting off in the cold wind.
Pickets of Dartmouth cavalry patrol the perimeter on mud-caked geldings, keeping the displaced families pinned between the tree line and the marsh.
INT. ASHFIELD BORDER PAVILION - MORNING
JADE (18) sits upright in a carved high-backed chair. She
wears a
formal
coat of dark gray wool clasped with silver at
the throat. Her violet eyes, clear and sharp, study a massive boundary ledger laid across the central table.
PEMEL BERO (20s) stands two paces behind her right shoulder.
His coat is tailored and clean. His mirrored glasses gleam beneath the swinging oil lanterns, reflecting the room.
Across the table sit THREE COUNCIL DELEGATES in layered blue velvet. Flanking them stands MARSHAL TRENT (50s), an austere Dartmouth commander with an iron gorget locked tight around his throat.

It's our month, horror writers of #Scriptsky, so I have to ask:

What draws you to writing horror, and what was the seminal horror film for you growing up? 👀

I don't feel like I have too many legit scary opening pages, but this one definitely sets a tone. #Scriptsky

EXT. FARM - DAY

Corn.

An ocean of green cornstalks roll over endless prairie.

A man-made oasis tucked inside a shelter belt of cottonwoods.

Old red barn with chipping paint. Metal machine shed. A farmhouse with a sagging front porch.

PATRICK (40s) marches out with shotgun in hand, face awash in tears. A hardened farmer admitting defeat for the first time.

Muffled screams briefly escape from somewhere inside.

BREANNA (O.S.)

Please! Don't leave me down here!

Patrick slams the door shut.

Silence returns.

Boards creak as he steps across the porch, down the steps.

OPERATOR (V.O.)

9-1-1 what is your emergency?

PATRICK (V.O.)

I can't... I can't do this again...

He crosses the yard, disappears behind the machine shed.

OPERATOR (V.O.)

Sir, what is your emergency?

Heavy breathing between sobs.

PATRICK (V.O.)

Tell Breanna daddy's sorry.

A moment of hesitation.

Clouds drift overhead.

Golden corn tassels catch the slight breeze.

A shotgun BLAST.

Crows take to the sky as the reverberation turns into—GERMINATION, a feature by Leah Simmons

Featuring a woman with dark splotches on her naked skin in a cornfield.

If a lawyer can get paid by the hour for touching a clients file, then why can’t I get paid for just writing a line of dialogue for a script? #thoughtoftheday #scriptsky #filmsky
