Sympathy for the Bedeviled

Simply look at the lives of these people and imagine those multitudes and the incredible pain, utter lovelessness, utterly miserable and confused minds they carry as adults.

Then think beyond them to the many-fold more of the masses who have similar but lesser versions of lives and experiences as the “enraptured.”

Add to that the incredible power of fear ... not only fear; but fear that has, well, demonically, been projected into the biggest expanse existing in the universe — that of the imagination and that of the Unknown, combined.

If you can get a sense of that fear, even a small part, you will realize the utter terror that awakens them, that is there in the middle of the night as they approach consciousness, and which, like a squirming frog, inhabits, nay, becomes the daytime brain and thoughts of these people, and motivates them to do anything, anything at all, that might promise a snippet of relief.

You will see that they believe in hell because they in fact live lives that are the closest things in existence to actual hells. This is made that much worse, indeed, multiplied many times over, by the idea implanted…

Yet aware of the criticism that their very own values, taken to the Yuppie extremes, was generating in the independent press, as well as the negative publicity there about the cocaine use of the Yuppies, the World-War-Two Generation saw an opportunity not only to defeat but also to “get back” at their opponents, the Sixties Generation, by ridiculing them. The Sixties Generation had of course incurred the wrath of the WWII Generation by opposing and confronting them on the Vietnam War in sometimes harsh and hostile ways.

As for the Yuppies who came on the scene after the Sixties Generation, in the predominant World-War-Two Generation fashion of scapegoating — which is the accompaniment of denial and ignoring the fact Yuppies expressed the values the WWII Gen had inculcated in them — the WWII Gen targeted their younger Yuppie clones from the outset. Especially the older generation directed their ire at the cocaine use of the time. The Yuppies, with their cocaine use, were portrayed in the WWII- Generation-paid-for media as former Sixties hippies who had simply grown older but — consistent with their alleged “narcissism” — were still selfish, only now, materially so. Thus the appellation, the “Me” Generation.

…unless there’s somebody, persons, that you hope would hear you. Would that not be number three, right?”

“Well, you old farts really are big on this self-analytical crap, aren’t you? Well, I ain’t no pussy, but I am man enough to say that I couldn’t escape the logic that ... yeah, I am, inside, wanting to share, and share myself to some, to some ... well, I guess, I just wouldn’t mind if, uh, really by accident of course, some people, who never got to know me this way, might see me and understand ... well, uh....”

Let’s Play a Mind Game.

“Oh, understand. Nothing wrong with that. But, uh, how ’bout you indulge an old fart and just try out something that I think will be a real gas for you, er, perhaps I should say, phat, er, uh ... . Look, you can trust me to take the time to play a little, let’s say, mind- game. It’s lots of fun.”
PRE/PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY AND PHENOMENON OF RE-EXPERIENCE

Frank Lake

Breathwork, First Trimester, Early Experience as Foundation for Myths

Frank Lake, though less well-known again, has probably been the premier theoretician on the topic of prenatal events during the first three months of gestation. Just prior to his death in the early eighties, he wrote a culmination of his thirty-year investigation into pre- and perinatal influence in two works titled Tight Corners in Pastoral Counselling and The First Trimester. In these works he goes beyond his other works (for example, 1966) in placing the roots of all later experience, and in particular, distress, at the first three months of physical existence.

Lake began his investigation of re-experience in 1954. Like Stanislav Grof, he did this using LSD, initially, in the psycholytic therapy that was being developed at that time to facilitate therapeutic abreaction.
Only by Leaving Can a Fish Know It Lives in Water: Biologically Constituted Realities Summary and A Call to End Science’s Culture War

Biologically Constituted Realities Summary

What I am saying here in Part One, “Reality, Human and Otherwise — Biologically Constituted Realities” is that basically our sciences have shown they cannot determine what is real, let alone measure it, because they are extensions of our senses which are themselves imperfect. So we cannot really know what is real. Further, we find that just as culture creates our reality for us, that prior to that our biology creates the reality upon which culture can build. This means that we are able to understand what is human reality at least, though not ultimate reality, by looking at the only reality that all humans share — our biological one.

…well as that of it emerging from the mouth — as examples, the “volcano-new-species” episode of The X Files and the dance hall scene in “Jacob’s Ladder” — indicating fetal emergence mixed with ungentle neonatal mouth clearing, as mentioned above.

Membrane Walls

But this new variation of “fetal emergence” has human faces pushing through membrane-like elastic walls!

Ventura Out of the Womb

A good example of this occurs in the movie, “Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, When Nature Calls.” In the Ace Ventura movie, Jim Carrey emerges from inside a mechanical rhino with virtually all birth elements evident.

He is holed up in a hot and suffocating “womb” — that is, he is inside the rhino.

…themselves and the world, only. For they are on their raft made of luggage, indicating the paltry number of things — physical but also emotional “baggage” — that are required to be taken along on the journey of life, or, more accurately, on the stormy and crooked path to self.

It is nighttime, and again, dominating the starlit sky there is a huge image of a moon. More about the meaning of this scene in just a little bit, but for now, let us focus on the meaning of a lunar theology that these two striking scenes are indicating.

Lunar Theologies, Solar Theologies

What is the meaning of lunar in lunar theology? A lunar theology is not in denial of the darkness of life ... it acknowledges, just like a night scene with a full moon, that life is lived in darkness — of our true selves and the nature of reality — but that it contains a guiding light, a reflection of the Divine (the moon). As humans we find ourselves in a deluded state relative to the Divine, in ignorance and separate, but physical reality is metaphor of the Divine, constantly revealing Itself to us and guiding us hOMe. The Divine is immanent in Nature and ready to reveal Itself to us in any of the moments we will allow It to.

Thus, there are measurable differences between women and men in their desires for protection versus for risk-taking; for nesting as compared to wandering; for family-home life as against adventure and a shackle-less existence; and finally, for analytical detached pur- suits of a solitary nature versus social, people-oriented, playful, and family pursuits. That hardly means the potential for both tendencies does not exist equally in both. Yet, statistics indicate that secondary altriciality with its demands for mothering had an effect on male and female behavior, needs, and desires. Women have stronger desires for, and more actual need for, security. Whereas men are more likely to feel relatively more unattached to relationship, to family, and even to nurturing and providing ... despite what men say.

Social Structure

As a consequence of secondary altriciality, humans have a distinct social structure in the family and the group. Indeed, the natural social configuration has women at the center, dispensing care and nourish- ment, and men on the peripheries, doing whatever they can find to do when they are absolutely not needed for reproduction, defense, or nonessentials and luxuries like meat and “entertainment” — that is to say, ritual, religion, and performance.
Economics to Piss on You

I pondered, is it funny, or horrible, that I had been making money hand over fist as I kept shorting the market, buying only puts, having fully expected this crash ever since Bush had put in his tax-cuts-for- the-rich policy in his first year of office?3

I expected this crash to come near the end of the W’s second term, like had happened to Reagan who had employed the same asinine throw-money-at-the-rich policy. Both presided over huge transfers upward to the already “filthy rich.” They did this fully aware that these folks would not spend it to create jobs, but instead would buy yachts and — one big rage of the Reagan era — expensive art, which they bid through the roof, making headlines in those days, as one art object after another would break a new record. At the time, we all thought: “Great idea, Ron baby. Now you just tell me how money locked up in art will somehow create jobs and tinkle down on the poor?”

PLANETMATES: THE GREAT REVEAL

Page 8
4. THE PRIMAL MATRIX OF MIND

Page 45

Our Prenatal and Perinatal Matrix

Without diminishing the historical importance of Jung’s contributions, I need to stress that what I am asserting goes much further than Jung’s contentions. For I believe we biologically determine our view of reality, as a species,

1) in the biological structures that comprise us and orient us in a world of space;

2) in the biochemical processes that constitute our changingness and situate us in a world of time;

3) and, most saliently, in the individual biological history that is universal for us and unique to us as a species.

What I am saying is that our biological structures, processes, and history — history meaning our past experience as individuals — create the worlds of space, time, and memory within which we move and have our existence.

By this last one, memory, however, I mean much more than that our past experience comprises the knowledge base or data bank from which we concoct our life schemes and decisions. I also mean much more than that our past experiences affect us in ways of which we are unaware, that is to say unconsciously ... that we are affected by repressed or forgotten memories. No, I mean to go much farther and deeper than that.
Would we perceive their existence as human changes in pressure, sound, touch, smell, sight, taste? As atmospheric or environmental “ambiance” changes? As solar activity or astronomical phenomena? As change in mood state, or thought pattern? Or hypothalamic or metabolic or heart or respiratory rate change? As nuemenon, “aura,” Words of God, Music of the Spheres?... Indeed, as leprechauns, ghosts, or elves? Or perhaps as forcible elements in dreams? Inspirational thought or feeling? Poltergeists, angels, “allies,” aliens, psychic phenomena?

Our Knowledge Is Limited

Then again, would we even perceive this other or these other “species” of beings and/or unimaginable realities at all? Would they be totally out of the domain of detection by anything within our experience — whether sensory, cognitive, affective, intuitive, imaginative, hallucinative?

The point is that we have no, absolutely no, way of knowing what is really real, what it “all” real-ly looks like unless we anthropocentrically…

I. BEING SHIVA — DESTROYING AND CREATING WORLDS

Page 8
Seen Grof’s way, mythological events have an a priori standing; a priori meaning they are not reducible to life events such as the traumas of birth. They arise “of themselves” and have an independent or self-contained quality, not a derived one. According to Grof, transpersonal events are not a posteriori events; they do not “come after.” They are not derived from earlier experience. Which is to say, their existence is not dependent upon — let alone, caused by — the early pre- and perinatal experiences they so express.

While some might say we have the mythologies we do because we all have these early experiences and that is why myths are so similar across different individuals and cultures, proponents of Grof’s view would say that our mythologies are not attributable to our early events and that they exist independently of human life. They are seen as archetypes in the Jungian sense of being outside of and prior to human events. Much like Plato’s Forms, or iconic Ideas, they have a kind of prior and greater reality than the realities that emanate from our events as humans. In fact, the term biological materialism has been used by those in Grof’s camp to describe the idea that birth-like mythological and archetypal symbolism and experiences are derived from birth events. Saying they are derived is…

PREFACE. A DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS

Page xxix
Clearly, with our planet on the brink of worldwide ecocide, and our species permitting an odd hara- kiri of itself — for no reason other than being truly demented about the major things of life, like survival — there is something awry in who we have become. How else do we explain our modern materialistic and consumer-oriented style of being that would value drinking out of plastic bottles, even as it contributes to the deaths of our children? How did we become “suicidal ape”?3

Indeed we find there are factors arising of our evolution that have compelled us to turn on our own existence. Furthermore, those devel- opments have determined our status as the philosophical ape, forever uncertain of our status in Nature, our role in the Universal scheme, and the optimal activities of human life. Our fall from grace has made us varied, confused, and trying to figure it out, as well as humanicidal. Yet we were not always that way. We were planetmates once, too, and we participated in a natural not cultural stream of events.

However, from that Edenal time there was a step-by-step descent from that state of grace till we arrive at our situation of industrial civilization today. There were developments that increased our split from Nature. It happened over time, gradually, imperceptibly. This supposed evolution, actually a devolution, is related to birth pain ... indeed, they are all direct results of birth trauma. For that trauma results in fear and…

THE CRISIS OF HUMANITY AND THE NEW HERO’S AND HEROINE’S CYCLE

…attention, put out, published, and promulgated by the best scientists of our time, mixed in with the more mundane messages of our daily newspapers and nightly newscasts, though we mostly turn our ears from them. Still, you are aware of them, else you would not have this book in your hands right now.

There are other types of folks, however, the ones who will never see a book like this. There will always be those that will have their heads in the sand and will be cast about like flotsam upon the waters by the events swirling around them — impotent in the face of them and dependent upon other’s actions for the result. If you are one, know we’re trying to save you, too.

Assuming you are not one of them — a good bet, if you are reading this — there is much to say about the current apocalyptic trends.

But even those of us aware of this crisis hardly think of it. Of course it is our normal psychic defenses that operate to keep this huge awareness out of our daily minds. We must do this in order to be able to function. But perhaps, for some of us, our defenses work too well — so much so that we unthinkingly participate in and contribute to our own demise. This is classic neurotic self-sabotaging, self-destruction on a macro scale.
