As the sun was setting, this mute swan was quietly making its way around a western #Michigan lake last month. This species is not native to the United States: it was introduced from Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries because the birds look good on water. #BirdOfTheDay #LightAndShadow #Birds

A large nearly all-white swan is swimming in a body of water. It has black markings adjacent to its bill, which is orange. Mute swans (Cygnus olor) have body lengths of 50.0-59.8 inches (127-152 cm), weigh 194.0-504.4 ounces (5,500-14,300 g), and have wingspans of 81.9-93.7 inches (208-238 cm). Long-tailed duck on an overcast and windy day.

Female long-tailed duck is brownish overall with whiter face and a large dark cheek patch. It's on a river with medium sized waves that are reflecting the late evening light on an overcast day in a way that allows the bird to almost disappear with near perfect camouflage.

In this horizontal color photograph, a great blue heron is seen in left profile just past the center of the frame, standing on a log in the water with its neck elegantly stretched out and its head and beak pointed downward. The entire scene is immersed in deep shadow except for the heron’s head and part of its neck, which are illuminated by the first light of morning. The background is filled with cattails and reeds remaining in the deep morning shade, while the pond water in the foreground is equally dark. A beautiful study of light and shadow, with a great blue heron hunting in wetland habitat so vital to its existence.
