This #FossilFriday I wanted to share a teaser for some work coming out this week on how best to go about retrodeforming our #Ediacaran fossils here in Newfoundland. These are from another new fossil site with a lot of tectonic compression that changes the appearance of the fossils needing retrodef.

Three different images of a fossil lungfish skull. Top left: photograph of Sorbitorhynchus deleaskitus (GMC V2034.1) from the Lower Devonian of China in dorsal view. Top right: virtual rendering of the same specimen with various features including nerve canals marked in white. Bottom right: another virtual rendering of the same specimen, this time slightly enlarging rostral region, with partial transparency revealing internal canals and highlighting the path of various nerves, arteries and veins in different colours.

In the Sao Khua Formation of Thailand, sauropod remains have been found associated with both ziphodont theropod teeth and conical spinosaurid teeth, suggesting both fed on sauropods. Sadly, neither Siamotyrannus nor Siamosaurus are known from a whole lot (the latter just from teeth). #FossilFriday

#FossilFriday: the displaced vertebrae at the base of the unexpectedly long neck of the Plesiosaurus discovered by Mary Anning in 1823 which caused some discussion at the time, and Henry De la Beche's fun interpretation of how the bones came to be displaced in his 1829-31 lithograph Duria antiquior.

Left, photograph of the long neck of a plesiosaur skeleton with a scatter of vertebrae (circled) at the base of the neck; right detail from an 1830 reconstruction of a plesiosaur with its neck being bitten by a large ichthyosaur.

Amazing what you find on Saatchi Art. The extinct giant salamander Andrias scheuchzeri, the famous Homo diluvii testis and star of War with the Newts, now finds its way to contemporary Surrealist art in a 2014 work by Czech painter Rudolf Janรกk. #FossilFriday?
